Just to make it clear precisely what we’re talking about, here: it’s not good . 25,000 acres burned so far, and the state is apparently as dry as a bone right now, thanks to a drought. Let me show you the extent of the problem: That picture is taken from Weather Underground’s WunderMap (as of roughly 10 PM EDT, September 5, 2011*). The red flames represent fires, obviously: the dark smudges represent smoke cover. Just in case the picture isn’t loading for you on your particular platform, let me sum it up for you: A LARGE PORTION OF CENTRAL AND EAST TEXAS IS ON FIRE RIGHT NOW. I understand that there are people trying to politicize this situation, for their own purposes. I invite all of them to shut up and instead do something useful , like send their readers or listeners over to the American Red Cross . We’ve had the first set of speakers tonight: Rick Scott, Jim Demint, Nikki Haley. Cliche to say ‘a lot of energy,’ but there’s an enthusiasm here that is at higher… Intensity than we’ve had in the past. It’s fun to see, actually. It’s also hot as all get-out, which is why half the Contributors are decompressing in a pizza parlor right now. That and the fact that we’re going to be doing it all over again tomorrow. Moe Lane PS: I’ve said this a lot tonight, but let me say it again: we’re all very pleased that RedState is a help to our readers. That’s what we’re here for, after all.

RS Gathering: The First Day.

Or by Twitter @AaronWorthing.] I am not sure how many of our readers are in a position to take advantage of this, but frankly I hadn’t even heard it existed until Thursday when shooting the breeze with someone. Apparently it is not getting very much attention. This is the official Virginia page on the subject and here’s the list of the covered products . And even if you don’t want to store up anything in case of hurricanes, a lot of the items are just useful generally. The deal ends Tuesday, so you do have that time limitation. Also, if you do choose to take advantage of it, make sure the store is participating. It doesn’t do you much good to get a tax holiday if the store hasn’t programmed its registers to recognize the holiday. By the way in a completely unrelated note this is when we celebrate the anniversary of when I became engaged to my wife. We could go by the exact date, but we prefer to go by memorial day weekend, because it was at the end of memorial day weekend that I proposed. I gave her seeing eye dog a treat and put aside her red-tipped white cane and… Kidding! Her eyes are perfectly fine (and yet she still said yes, go figure). [Posted and authored by Aaron Worthing.]
