What Is It with Massachusettes Governors and Armored Vehicles? There are actually some reasons to vote for Mitt Romney in this year’s GOP Primaries. I don’t personally find them compelling, and have endorsed one of Gov. Romney’s opponents. I admire the man’s ability to manage large projects and he does know how an executive office works. Voting for Mitt Romney may not be my personal predilection, but it isn’t quite as pointless as wearing a rally cap or tossing maidens down a well for good luck. People have also offered sales pitches on Romney’s behalf that are about as believable as SpongeBob Squarepants discovering the Higgs Boson. One of the sadder aspects of Mitt Romney’s mild ride this year has been watching people I have deemed intellectually powerful perform about as well at ratiocination as my little boy’s favorite cartoon character would at advancing particle physics. When Jonah Goldberg of National Review Magazine wrote The Case For Romney about a week ago, I remembered what outstanding work he had done in the past, and therefore delayed this post until it could age a bit and marinate. I felt I owed him a better expression of my angst than “WTF?” Goldberg states the hypothesis that Mitt Romney would make a great president for Conservatives because he would owe us. He states the following: …there is an instrumental case to be made for him: It is better to have a president who owes you than to have one who claims to own you…..If elected, Romney must follow through for conservatives and honor his vows to repeal Obamacare, implement Representative Paul Ryan’s agenda, and stay true to his pro-life commitments. Oh my! Is that really so? When he was Governor of Massachusetts, how did he repay all the Republicans he owed up there? Romneycare? Was it the complete and utter destruction of the state’s GOP infrastructure and popularity in his wake? Martha Coakley has done far more to help Republicans win high office in Massachusetts than Mitt Romney. Jonah Goldberg tries to explain why Mitt Romney doesn’t quite gel with Middle Class and Working Class Conservative voters. He makes Romney sound like the slightly nerdy white guy sitting around studying mathematics problems in Southside Richmond, VA. Romney doesn’t dislike these people as much as he doesn’t grok their folkways quite, and can’t make himself look authentic. I think this dramatically understates Mitt Romney’s problems with Conservative voters. To Governor Romney, Southern and Mid-Western Social Conservatives are like Dustin Hoffman’s character in the great Western Little Big Man was to the Cheyenne Indians who rescued him from death. Mitt Romney doesn’t even subconsciously believe he comes from the same species. The word Cheyenne, when translated literally, means “human being.” Those who were not Cheyenne were considered something else. Mitt Romney, I’ve come to sincerely believe, considers those not from his own rather isolated Cheyenne Village to be something else. It explains how he could even accidently articulate the fact that he doesn’t worry about the very poor. He’s willing to be nice to people like myself, but it’s not like he’ll any more use for me after Election Day than he would for a prophylactic after an act of sexual intercourse. I couldn’t make Mitt Romney understand who I am and where I come from even if he was really bored one afternoon and decide to amuse himself by actually giving a rat’s anus. There simply isn’t any way on God’s Green Earth that Mitt Romney would ever afford me the status of someone he would actually owe something to. If I ever were presumptuous enough to suggest such a thing it would serve as a profound affront to his self-image and dignity. Like Ann Coulter in the wake of her “THREE CHEERS FOR ROMNEYCARE” debacle and the Massachusetts GOP, anyone foolish enough to believe Mitt Romney owed them something in return for a vote would quickly discover the finite limits of Lord Willard’s sense of noblesse oblige. Some reasons actually exist to support to support Mitt Romney for President. One or two of them might even be worthwhile. However, any sense that he feels a bond of honor to movement Conservatism is simply delusional. I look back at all the great, wise and hilarious things Jonah Goldberg has written for National Review Magazine. This body of superb political commentary gives me reason to hope this endorsement he penned of Mitt Romney was just the lower tail of his Bell Curve. Jonah, for the sake of your honor as a man of intellect; climb down from the Mitt Romney Tank.

I appreciate Joe Lawler for linking to the video showing Elizabeth Warren and other Democrats vying to face off against Scott Brown next year unable to answer the simplest of questions. In what years, this century, did the Red Sox win the World Series? What self-respecting New Englander doesn't know the answer to that? For the benefit of non-baseball fans, the Boston Red Sox have won the World Series twice this century - 2004 & 2007. While Warren was correct to say that the Sox triumphed in 2004 she told the audience much to their horror that they also won the Fall Classic in 2008. I wish it were so. I was at Fenway Park for Game 5 of the American League Championship Series in which, on the brink of being eliminated by the Tampa Bay Rays, the Red Sox came back from a 7-0 deficit in the 7th inning to win the game 8-7 on a single by J.D. Drew . Unfortunately for the Sox, the Rays won that year's ALCS in seven games. But Warren and her fellow Dems were merely adhering to a time honored tradition of being completely clueless when it comes to baseball. As Joe mentioned there was Martha Coakley who claimed Curt Schilling was a Yankees fan

President Obama's nomination of former Ohio AG Richard Cordray to lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau raises the question of what will become of Elizabeth Warren, who had played a leading role in designing the CFPB. A number of commentators are suggesting that she will challenge Scott Brown for the Senate in Massachusetts, as Democrats have few other strong candidates. But setting aside the fact that Brown remains popular in Massachusetts, it's an open question whether Warren would be a good campaigner. She's widely regarded as a "progressive hero," but mostly because she, perhaps by default, has been the standard-bearer for the anti-bank sentiment of the left wing.

At a rally in support of Wisconsin public sector unions in Boston Common yesterday, Massachusetts Democratic Congressman Michael Capuano told union supporters, "Every once in a while you need to get out on the streets and get a little bloody when necessary." Now Capuano has since walked back his remarks. O.K. Fine. Yet this is the same Capuano who recently said , "Nothing wrong with throwing a coffee cup at someone if you're doing it for human rights." Ah yes, the ends justifies the means. Of course, could you imagine the holy hell that would have been unleashed if Capuano had been a Republican Congressman who had told a Tea Party rally they needed to get out on the streets and get a little bloody? Capuano would have got the Paul Krugman treatment a la Michele Bachmann . Such treatment would have consisted of not placing Bachmann's "armed and dangerous" remarks in their proper context . But therein lies the difference between a Minnesota Republican and a Massachusetts Democrat. It should be noted Capuano, who was bested by Martha Coakley for the Democratic Senate nomination last year, is being touted as a possible opponent for Scott Brown in 2012. It could get bloody interesting.

Despite a mediocre term in office, Massachusetts voters easily re-elected Deval Patrick to a second term as Governor last night. While Republicans were triumphant throughout the country, they were shut out in the Bay State. This will no doubt embolden Democrats as they look to regain "Ted Kennedy's seat" from Scott Brown in 2012. The question now, of course, is who will challenge Brown in two years time. I would put my bet on none other than Deval Patrick. He is surely no Martha Coakley. One might not think a great deal of his legislative achievements, but Patrick is a first class campaigner and Massachusetts Democrats are going to need that when they face off against the personable and popular Brown. Just as Patrick isn't Martha Coakley, Brown is neither Charlie Baker nor Kerry Healey or for that matter any other Republican in Massachusetts. A week before the vote, I attended a forum for Massachusetts GOP congressional hopefuls including Sean Bielat and Jeff Perry. While Bielat and Perry the other candidates made a good accounting of themselves in front of a friendly audience, there was something missing. They all lacked Brown's populist touch and innate charisma. It should be noted that Brown nearly closed the gender gap with female voters. His good looks certainly didn't hurt him. I mean even Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg wouldn't walk out on him. Or put another way, I don't think Bill Hudak could have gotten away with posing nude for Cosmopolitan. Even if Coakley did run the most inept senatorial campaign in American electoral history one could still make the case that she might have pulled it off had she run against anyone other than Brown. All of this to say that Democrats in Massachusetts will need a big bat against Brown and as of right now Deval Patrick carries the biggest stick.

Last week, I wrote about some encouraging signs for Republicans in Massachusetts. Stacy was also up on the main site with a piece about Barney Frank's Republican challenger. But unlike in the January special election, the Democrats aren't taking this lying down. In two trips to Massachusetts before that election, I saw exactly one Martha Coakley sign. It was in Boston. There was literally no indication of palpable grassroots enthusiasm for Coakley in the suburbs and very little of it in the urban Democratic strongholds. As evidenced by signage at least, an imperfect indicator, Deval Patrick looks strong in the places you'd expect him to be strong: Boston, Cambridge, Newton, Brookline. There were a fair number of Barney Frank signs in Newton. Charlie Baker signs were much thinner on the ground than Scott Brown signs and bumper stickers earlier this year. Even Brown, despite doing nearly everything right while his Democratic opponent did nearly everything wrong, only won with 52 percent of the vote. So Massachusetts Republicans wishing to replicate his success are going to have to pull out close races against Democrats who aren't taking the election for granted.

Understandable that this would be said of Chris Coons: after all, look at that happy grin! That marvelous posture! That glossy coat… pelt… erm, skin! Admittedly, this isn’t the best example of the breed in the smarts department - Coons admitted to being a Marxist in his more hirsute days , and we all know that Marxism is intellectualism for stupid people - but smarts aren’t everything. Particularly when it comes to Democratic Senators: after all, when Carly Fiorina gets done with Senator Ma’am there’s going to be a vacancy anyway. Assuming he survives his own general election, I’m sure that Coons will be a good boy, yes he will, yes he will! Heck, I bet he’s even housebroken. What’s that? I’m being cruel, vicious, and mean by treating Chris Coons as a dog, not a human being? I am showing my utter contempt for the formerly bearded Marxist? I am treating Coons like some sort of… pet? Tell it to Harry Reid . “I’m going to be very honest with you — Chris Coons, everybody knows him in the Democratic caucus. He’s my pet. He’s my favorite candidate,” Reid said. Well, maybe there should be an ellipsis and a start-over to the sentence there… “I’m glad he’s running. I just think the world of him. He’s my pet.” No, there probably shouldn’t have been an ellipsis and a start-over to the sentence there. Via Ace of Spades (Conclusion: “Beta-male”) and Hot Air (Conclusion: “Martha Coakley”). For myself, I’m reminded of a song: Of course, that assumes that we have to worry about Harry Reid’s opinion once Sharron Angle is done with him . Moe Lane PS: I swear, the Good Lord looks out for fools, drunkards, small children, the United States of America, and the Republican party. Christine O’Donnell for Senate . Homo sapiens sapiens .
