Priscilla Buckley, October 17, 1921 – March 25, 2012
It is hard to say which one valued most in Priscilla Buckley, her kindness or her intelligence… she had so much of both, and she was always so generous in sharing them. Priscilla never married and had no children, but to all of us who dealt with National Review during her long years as Managing Editor, she was a benevolent matriarch, the one who held the talented, quirky NR “family” together and kept eccentrics, prima donnas and feuding ideologues focused on the task of pulling together to make National Review the world class publication it became during her tenure. I think there were even times when she had a commendable calming effect on her brilliant but sometimes impulsive kid brother, Bill, of whom she once told an interviewer, “When you’re 12, what an 8-year-old says has absolutely no importance in your life. And it stays with you even when you’re adults.” Some years after Priscilla retired from NR — and had authored two delightful and insightful memoirs about her long career in journalism ( A String of Pearls and Living It Up With National Review , which any aspiring young writer can learn a lot from), we had a long conversation at a Washington reception. Priscilla, gracious as ever, made a few kind remarks about my own writing. I won’t bore you with them, but I will say that I was genuinely touched because, besides being a kind and nurturing editor, Priscilla was one of the wisest and most rigorous judges of the written word I have ever known. She had the gift of bringing out the best in those around her, especially writers.
Gingrich Vows To Increase Awareness of Radical Islamic Threat…
CAIR last seen furiously drafting a press release accusing Newt of spreading “Islamophobia.” Via National Journal: GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich pledged on Tuesday that if elected, he would overhaul the State Department, strengthen the intelligence community, and increase “our understanding of the threat of radical Islam” to aid Israel. “We need an administration with

Obama Loses His First Debate
In a speech that the Gingrich campaign has begun broadcasting around the country, and which is posted at Newt.org, Gingrich presents a unique new vision for a booming American economy. I think you will find it pathbreaking. It is so compelling that it drew Obama into a transcontinental debate with the former Speaker, the first exchange that Obama has decisively lost since he appeared on the national stage. Gingrich began the explanation of his vision like this:
Mitt Romney’s Hair
As John notes below, Public Policy Polling is saying that if Mitt Romney loses Michigan today he will have blown it in the last 48 hours. Romney’s latest gaffe helpfully illustrates his problem, both in his former home state and in the Republican presidential race at large. Contrasting himself with Rick Santorum, Romney said, “It’s very easy to excite the base with incendiary comments… I’m not willing to light my hair on fire to try and get support.” The first image that springs to mind is of Romney’s hair. If he is the nominee, Republicans might start supporting a constitutional amendment that protects Romney’s hair from such desecration. But reread the first half of his statement: “It’s very easy to excite the base with incendiary comments.” Without trying to read too much into a single quote, this is a good example of why Romney is having trouble gaining (or at least keeping) traction: many Republican voters feel that Romney has a low opinion of their intelligence, that he thinks the base is dumb, that he believes conservative rhetoric is just boob bait for the bubbas. This perception is why a critical mass of conservatives don’t trust Romney and are reluctant to support him.

White House Says Obama Still Governing After He Hits 8 Fundraisers In Three Days…
They apparently don’t hold our intelligence in high regards. (USA Today) — Later today, President Obama will be attending the seventh and eighth fundraisers of his three-day trip west, but aides say he is also conducting his duties as chief executive. “It sort of ebbs and flows,” said White House spokesman Jay Carney. “We’re consolidating a
