Newt, a Racist?
I think a definitive answer was provided by the late Robert Novak in his priceless memoir, The Prince of Darkness , on pp. 530-1, wherein he described Newt’s rage over a column Novak had written taking him to task for “regressing to his Rockefeller Republican roots” and failing to attack racial quotas. This occurred at a small American Spectator dinner on July 27, 1995. “David Brock, then still a supposed conservative working for the Spectator , was there,” Novak writes, “and later described Gingrich ‘flying into a red-faced, table-pounding rage’ at me.” Novak wrote the incident up in a subsequent column, noting how “infuriated” Newt said he was by his earlier “column on affirmative action,” and adding: “He does fear alienating such blacks as his Georgia Congressional colleague and fighter for civil rights in the ’60s, Rep. John Lewis, and warned against instilling apprehension about ‘resegregation.’” I was there that night and recall the angry Newt pleading, “What do I say to John Lewis?” I distinctly remember thinking that in Newt’s view, doing away with affirmative action would be like doing
There is much outrage in Pakistan over a NATO strike yesterday which took the lives of 24 Pakistani soldiers. Pakistan claims the attacks were unprovoked and has closed off its western border to trucks delivering food and fuel supplies to U.S. and Coalition troops in Afghanistan. It is also demanding the U.S. leave an air base in Pakistan where drones are serviced within two weeks. But when it comes to Pakistan things are never simple and straightforward. For its part, Afghanistan claims that Pakistan was firing upon Afghan and NATO forces near the Afghan-Pakistan border. Now there is no love lost between Afghanistan and Pakistan but the NATO countries in question can certainly confirm or deny what Afghanistan is asserting. Both the U.S. & NATO will conduct separate investigations of the incident. But given Pakistan’s history of being
Black Friday Pepper Sprayer Surrenders in LA
(The Blaze/AP) The woman accused of wreaking havoc at a California Walmart by showering fellow Black Friday shoppers with pepper spray, surrendered to authorities but was released pending further investigation after she refused to discuss the incident, police told The AP Saturday. The woman, whose name was not released, is suspected of firing pepper spray into a crowd in order to clear a path to a crate of Xbox video game players that were being unwrapped late Thanksgiving night at a Walmart in the upscale Porter Ranch section of the San Fernando Valley. A video posted on YouTube may show the incident. It reportedly shows the moments after a woman pepper sprayed shoppers over video games: The suspect got away in the confusion, and it was not known if she bought one of the Xboxes. Ten people suffered minor injuries from the spray and 10 others sustained cuts and bruises in the ensuing chaos. “Last night at 8:30 the suspect involved in the pepper spray incident at the Porter Ranch Walmart turned herself in,” police Sgt. Jose Valle said Saturday. She immediately invoked her right against self-incrimination, however, and refused to discuss the incident further. Police released her pending further investigation. Valle said investigators still have nearly a dozen witnesses to interview, including several spraying victims. He added it would likely be at least two days before an arrest in the case could be made. If the woman who surrendered is indeed the person who sprayed the crowd she could face battery charges. The attack took place about 10:30 p.m., shortly after the Walmart opened its doors for the traditional Black Friday sales that kick off the Christmas shopping season. A crowd of people had gathered to wait for store employees to unwrap the crate of discounted Xboxes. The incident was one of several across the nation that marred this year’s Black Friday. In the most serious case, a robber shot a shopper who refused to give up his purchases outside a Walmart in the San Francisco suburb of San Leandro. The victim was hospitalized in critical but stable condition. San Leandro police said the victim and his family were walking to their car around 1:45 a.m. Friday when they were confronted by a group of men who demanded their shopping items. When the family refused, a fight broke out, and one of the robbers pulled a gun and shot the man, said Sgt. Mike Sobek. Read the original: Black Friday Pepper Sprayer Surrenders in LA

[Posted by Karl] One of Cain’s accusers goes public : A fourth woman said Monday that presidential candidate Herman Cain engaged in sexually inappropriate behavior with her more than decade ago, though Cain was not her supervisor at the time. Sharon Bialek, the first woman to publicly accuse Cain of inappropriate behavior, said Cain was “sexually inappropriate” with her in 1997, saying he put his hand under her skirt and pushed her head toward his crotch after a dinner together. She said he backed away after she asked him to stop. The best part of it for Cain is that Bialek’s lawyer is Gloria Allred, who did her best to make the press conference a media circus. However, as Ed Morrissey notes: Despite Allred’s stupid comment about calling the incident Cain’s “idea of a stimulus package,” the fact that someone is willing to go on record and give specifics on a charge will make this seem a lot more credible than last week’s vague reporting from Politico. Making that more difficult is the statement from Bialek and Allred that the purported victim is a Tea Party Republican, which might indicate less of a credibility issue than otherwise. At this early stage, I would not bet the farm that Bialek is a Tea Partier. On the other hand, I am seeing a fair amount of knee-jerk denialism from some conservatives on Twitter. If Team Cain had not botched their response to this issue at virtually every turn, it might have been easier to dismiss. Update : Maybe the real upside for Cain is that this story will distract from Cain’s apparent ignorance on entitlement reform . Update 2 : The NYT, of course: In an interview after Ms. Bialek’s news conference, Joel P. Bennett, a lawyer for one of Mr. Cain’s anonymous accusers, said that Ms. Bialek’s claims were “very similar” in nature to the incident that occurred between his client and Mr. Cain. Of course. Update 3 : Folks on the Twitter were flipping over the fact that Bialek is being sued By Illinois Lending and the lender is represented by David J. Axelrod & Associates. Wrong Axelrod ( Obama’s is David M ).* But it might suggest a financial motive of some sort. *Original post linked to attorney David A. Axelrod. Thanks to Simon Templar for the correction. –Karl
