Leading Democrats in the House want to create a whole new multi-million research project to investigate whether cell phone use causes cancer in the wake of an overhyped report from the World Health Organization claiming that the devices “might” be linked to the disease. The report notes there is no evidence of any causal link and that the “risk,” if you can call it that, is the same as drinking coffee. This is what the Democrats worry about rather than Medicare. The risk of brain cancer has declined over the 30 years the cell phone use has exploded. And of course no major media outlet has reported that the absolute risk of brain cancer is nearly one in three million. Or that cell phones have contributed many benefits. Just another example of how pols seeking media attention fuel fear and legitimize lawsuits. The risk of receiving a Weiner tweet is much, much greater.

They are as much the enemy as the Islamists… NEW YORK (AP) — The chairwoman of the community board that voted for an Islamic center and mosque near ground zero said she believes adding an interfaith dimension would help unite people, saying a nondenominational chapel built at the Pentagon as part of a Sept. 11 memorial did just that. Julie Menin of Manhattan Community Board 1 reiterated Monday that she supports the project going up in the proposed location two blocks from the World Trade Center site, and that it contain a mosque as developers plan. But she suggested another section of the community center be turned into an interfaith, nondenominational area for people of all religious backgrounds. “What it could do is it could really get to the heart of the matter of making this project one that brings people together,” she said.

David Paterson for his description of the developers of a mosque planned near ground zero as peaceful, “almost westernized” Muslims. They say the Democrat mischaracterized the Muslim branch known as Sufi and his comment suggests other Muslims are a problem. In broadcast interviews Thursday, Paterson said Sufi Muslims trying to build the Islamic center two blocks from the World Trade Center site aren’t like Shiite Muslims. He then said the developers aren’t what he would classify as “mainland Muslim.”

I blame da Joooos… JAKARTA, July 16 — Indonesia’s Muslims learned today they have been praying in the wrong direction, after the country’s highest Islamic authority said its directive on the direction of Mecca actually had people facing Africa. Muslims are supposed to face the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia during prayer and the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) issued an edict in March stipulating westward was the correct direction from the world’s most populous Muslim country. “But it has been decided that actually the mosques are facing Somalia or Kenya, so we are now suggesting people shift the direction slightly to the north-west,” the head of the MUI, Cholil Ridwan, told Reuters. “There’s no need to knock down mosques, just shift your direction slightly during prayer.” Ridwan said Muslims need not fear that their prayers have been wasted because they were facing the wrong way. “Their prayers will still be heard by Allah,” he said.
