Renee Ellmers Wins NC-2 Recount; Etheridge to Concede

On November 19, 2010, in Barack Obama, by markboabaca

Rep. Bob Etheridge, the North Carolina Democrat who made headlines earlier this year by manhandling a student who approached him with a video camera , has called a 3 p.m. ET press conference where he is expected to concede to Republican Renee Ellmers. Backed by Tea Party activists, Ellmers was the only GOP challenger in the nation to run a campaign ad about the Ground Zero Mosque controversy . According to WXII-TV in Raleigh , a recount confirmed that Ellmers defeated Etheridge by about 1,500 votes. The

Folks, it ain’t over til it’s over. Bob “manhandle” Etheridge is pushing a recount in North Carolina, and Renee Ellmers needs our help. From her blog : Dear Supporters, Election night, after the ten counties in my district had reported their votes, I led Bob Etheridge by 2,100 votes. (That number is crucial because under North Carolina law Congressman Etheridge is not entitled to an ‘automatic recount’ if he trails by more than 1% – or 1,888 votes.) Then, yesterday afternoon – unexpectedly – the vote totals changed. The State Board of Elections reported my lead had dropped to 1,600 votes. Two hours later Bob Etheridge announced he intended to call for a recount. As a result, last night my campaign began hiring attorneys – eleven attorneys in all. One in each county to monitor each recount and an attorney to work with the North Carolina State Board of Elections. Right now, our best estimate of the minimum cost we face is $50,000. But, of course, my campaign spent every penny we had before the election. Yesterday, we appealed to the National Republican Congressional Committee for support, asking if they could contribute to help pay the costs of this recount. Their answer, unfortunately, was, No – that we would have to raise the money to pay for the recount ourselves. I was afraid that would be their answer. Months ago, I went to Washington and asked the National Republican Congressional Committee and many conservative leaders to help my campaign. Many conservative groups – like the Susan B. Anthony List, Concerned Women of America, Freedom Works, and Sarah Palin’s Sarah PAC all helped, but the NRCC declined. Later, they did support other campaigns in North Carolina – which, unfortunately, lost – but we never received their support. In fact, their spokesman told the press “that the campaign wasn’t ready for prime time” – which actually made it even harder for us to raise money. So, I am doubtful we will get support from the NRCC to help with the expense of the recount. For more on the NRCC’s position, read J.P. Freire at the Washington Examiner . As Ed Morrissey put it to Renee on his show yesterday , these things are like bloody divorces: they require money and lots of lawyers or else you get burned. Don’t let Etheridge keep his death grip. As you  are probably aware, Renee Ellmers defeated Bob ‘Who Are You” Etheridge by 2,100 votes. Two days later, the State Board of Elections inexplicably dropped to difference by 500 votes – just enough to have an automatic recount. Ellmers contacted the NRCC asking for their help in funding the lawyers that will be needed only

If you’ve been following the North Carolina race down in the 2nd District, you’ll know that Renee Ellmers has had a tough time beating back all that special-interest cash that “Move On” Bob Etheridge has had at his disposal. Well, you’re going to find that this is a special treat just before Halloween: The voters of North Carolina’s 2nd District are beginning to see through Etheridge’s ghoulish mask and see him for the creepy kind of guy he is. “Move On” Bob has been in politics longer than the majority of North Carolinians have been alive, which makes Renee’s task of unseating “Move On” Bob about as challenging as uprooting a rotten old Acorn tree. Earlier today, Civitas released poll results indicating that Republican Renee Ellmers has taken the lead in what has been Renee’s come-from-behind battle for the future of North Carolina and our country. According to Civitas, Renee Ellmers is ahead in the final days before next Tuesday. Democratic incumbent Congressman Bob Etheridge’s electoral future appears to be in jeopardy as he trails Republican challenger Renee Ellmers by 5 percentage points with less than one week until the election. According to the poll of 400 registered voters in North Carolina’s 2nd Congressional District, Ellmers leads Etheridge 46 percent to 41 percent.  Libertarian candidate Tom Rose garners 6 percent of the vote while 7 percent of voters are undecided. Among voters who say they are definitely voting this year, Ellmers’ lead grows to 49 percent to 40 percent. “Bob Etheridge is in the political fight of his life,” said Civitas Institute Senior Legislative Analyst Chris Hayes.  “The Republican tide sweeping across the nation appears to be catching Bob Etheridge in its wake.” Ellmers is able to build a lead due to strength among unaffiliated voters who are supporting her by a 52-19 margin.  Etheridge is also losing 20 percent of his Democratic base vote to Ellmers. Support for Etheridge tracks nearly in line with voter support for President Barack Obama in the district.  An identical 41 percent of voters both approve of the job Obama is doing as President and say they are voting for Etheridge.  Ninety-seven percent of voters who say they disapprove of the job Obama is doing are voting for Ellmers. It’s not over yet. You never know what the SEIU, Pelosi and Etheridge have slithering around up their purple sleeves. So, if you can, help give Renee the final push over the hump : Volunteer your time, contribute, but most of all get you, your friends, and neighbors out to vote on Tuesday. It’s time to help “Move On” Bob and Nancy Pelosi move on! __________________ “I bring reason to your ears, and, in language as plain as ABC, hold up truth to your eyes.”  Thomas Paine, December 23, 1776
