Another guy living in the shadows, by which I mean writing an article in a national publication about his illegal status : Washington state has canceled the driver’s license of a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist who attracted national attention with his disclosure that he is an illegal immigrant. Department of Licensing spokeswoman Christine Anthony said Thursday that officials opened an investigation after Jose Antonio Vargas’ essay about his background was published in the New York Times Magazine in June. Vargas wrote in his essay that he emigrated from the Philippines in 1993 when he was 12 years old at the wish of his mother. He moved to California, where his grandparents had arranged forged documents for him. When he was 16, Vargas wrote, he found out that he was in the country illegally after he tried to obtain a driver’s permit with those documents. . . . . The Licensing Department sent Vargas a letter requesting proof of residency, and the letter was returned. The state canceled his license July 18. I am outraged. I call upon all good citizens of conscience to demand that this man be allowed to seek citizenship in the normal manner that an illegal immigrant seeks citizenship. One second. I’ve just been handed a note that says he can already do that. Carry on, then. Thanks to daleyrocks.

To be fair, when Ron Paul said yesterday that it was completely awesome that Julian Assange was spreading our classified secrets across the internet for the entire world to see , he probably couldn’t have foreseen that the information would contain this : A long list of key facilities around the world that the US describes as vital to its national security has been released by Wikileaks. The US State Department in February 2009 asked all US missions abroad to list all installations whose loss could critically affect US national security. The list includes pipelines, communication and transport hubs. I mean, who could have possibly predicted that the leaking of classified diplomatic cables would lead to the disclosure of information that terrorists could use to get the most bang for their buck? Apparently not Ron Paul, who has actually gone so far as to make requests for what the next leak of classified information should be. As to the substance of Paul’s argument, absolutely no one is arguing that Assange ought to be criminally prosecuted for treason, for the painfully obvious reason that Paul himself pointed out; one cannot be a traitor to a country of which one is not a citizen. Quite a few people have suggested that Assange ought to be prosecuted as a lawbreaker - or better yet, summarily executed as a spy , because that is what Assange is. But the fact that Assange is not guilty of treason is not a good reason for a sitting Member of Congress to solicit attacks on America’s infrastructure. Unless, of course, the Congressman in question’s reflexive lodestar is the destruction of America, which seems to be more or less the case when it comes to Ron Paul.

Hah! Surrender you traitorous SOB and THEN we’ll give you access to the US legal system. ( CNN ) –The Obama administration has invoked the state secret privilege in seeking to dismiss a lawsuit filed on behalf of the father of Yemeni-American cleric and militant Anwar al-Awlaki, which sought to prevent the U.S. government from trying to target him for assassination. The government contended in a court filing that was submitted early Saturday morning that the case “would require the disclosure of highly sensitive national security information concerning alleged military and intelligence actions overseas.” “The plaintiff has demanded the government disclose a wide variety of classified information that could harm our national security. It strains credulity to argue that our laws require the government to disclose to an active, operational terrorist any information about how, when and where we fight terrorism, Matthew Miller, Justice Department spokesman, said in a statement Saturday. The court filing said the injunction sought by the al-Awlaki’s father “would be unprecedented, improper and extraordinarily dangerous.” It would “improperly inject the courts” into the administration’s decisions on “how to protect the American people from the threat of armed attacks.” Miller notes the lawsuit — which never denies Anwar al-Awlaki’s militant activity — said if al-Awlaki “wishes to access our legal system,” he should surrender and then “be held accountable for his actions.” But the American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Constitutional Rights — which filed suit in August on behalf of the father, Nasser al-Awlaki — said in a joint statement that the “idea that courts should have no role whatsoever in determining the criteria by which the executive branch can kill its own citizens is unacceptable in a democracy. In matters of life and death, no executive should have a blank check.”
