Everyone panic! Via Beltway Confidential: Researchers warned that global warming threatens the water supply for urban communities in Arizona, in a new report funded by the Department of Commerce. “Rapid growth in these areas has increased the vulnerability of urban water users to climatic changes,” the University of Arizona researchers, who collaborated with Mexican researchers

Coroner: Andrew Breitbart Died of a Heart Attack
The full autopsy report will be released next week. Meanwhile Breitbart.com tells us the coroner has said the cause of death was what was suspected . . . a heart attack : Chief Coroner Investigator Craig Harvey told Breitbart News that the final autopsy report would be released next week. A press release issued by the Department of Coroner (below) notes: “No prescription or illicit drugs were detected. The blood alcohol was .04%,” a negligible amount. Those who suggested that he was on some kind of illicit drugs should apologize, but of course they won’t. UPDATE: Commenter Dana links the piece I had been thinking about. It is on AlterNet and is by Maer Roshan and Hunter R. Slayton, and is titled What Really Killed Andrew Breitbart? The Likely Cause of Death The Mainstream Media Ignored . Nonetheless, soon after his death was announced, blogosphere back channels—and numerous emails to The Fix—began buzzing with speculation that drugs or alcohol had played a role in his passing. But despite their private discussions of the topic, not a single mainstream media outlet or website dared to publicly raise the question of substances. None but these Courageous Journalists, who raised it, and then doubled down. “Andrew Breitbart is dead at 43 from ‘natural causes,’” read a tweet that echoed hundreds of others posted after his death. “Yes I suppose wine is pretty natural.” A commenter on an addiction site noted that Breitbart’s enraged appearances reminded him of his own behavior after an extended cocaine binge. “You can’t summon up that kind of insane rage naturally,” he said. “No one can be so angry all the time.” There is no more reliable source for solid facts than random hateful Internet commenters. But there has been some public speculation that Breitbart’s drug use didn’t end in college. A source close to the blogger told The Fix on condition of anonymity that he’d done cocaine with Breitbart as recently as last October. On the day after his death, Anthony Cumia, of the radio show “Opie and Anthony,” said of Breitbart, “I went out drinking with him, and boy, can he party.” “He liked to stay awake,” added Anthony. “That’s all I’ll say.” A source close to Maer Roshan and Hunter R. Slayton told Patterico.com on condition of anonymity that they made up the above quote. Well, not really — but that assertion has the same credibility (especially now that I have admitted it’s not true). Given his erratic behavior, it’s curious that the mainstream media Breitbart so derided has been more willing to report on charges that he was killed by the White House than that he may have had a problem with alcohol or drugs. Consider the reaction to the death of Whitney Houston, whose body was not even in the ambulance before blogs and news outlets—including Breitbart’s own BigHollywood—began speculating that her death was alcohol- or drug-related. Given the endless coverage of celebrity addictions, we’ve almost come to expect pop stars to be battling something or other. But politicians, businessmen and reporters generally get a pass. “Drugs,” one editor noted, “didn’t really go with the Breitbart brand.” What explains this apparent double standard? Fear certainly has something to do with it—in this instance, fear on the part of an embattled mainstream media of conforming to right-wing allegations of liberal bias. Maybe what explains it is that there was a basis to suspect it with Houston — and it turned out to be true. There was no basis to suspect it with Andrew — and it turned out to be false. But these jerks won’t apologize. Go ahead, ask them. Then repeatedly bang your head against a brick wall. The latter will ultimately be more satisfying.

It’s time we invoke a new rule when discussing the federal budget: don’t focus on spending cuts; focus on limiting the size of government. All too often we get caught up in dollar figures of various government programs and agencies, instead of focusing on their imperative to exist in the first place. The first step in approaching a spending bill is to determine if the given venture is constitutionally sound. If the answer is no, there’s nothing more to debate. The second step is to determine if that venture, which is constitutionally sound, is helpful or harmful. Needless to say, if it is harmful to the public then it should be scuttled. Finally, once the constitutional rationale and the imperative for the venture are established, we can discuss the funding level of that venture. The case in point is the Energy-Water appropriations bill, which funds the Department of Energy and parts of the Department of Interior. There is no reason for the DOE to exist. Period. The nuclear program could easily be transferred to another part of the federal government, while we eliminate all of the wasteful programs that have not only failed to increase our energy supply, but encumbered its growth over the past few decades. Now that Republicans have focused so much attention on merely trimming the DOE budget, it turns out that they failed to cut anything! CQ reports that the Energy-Water bill passed out of the Energy-Water Appropriations subcommittee yesterday by voice vote actually appropriates $32.1 billion, an $88 million increase above fiscal 2012 levels. But here is the most egregious part of the bill: Frelinghuysen [the subcommittee chairman] said the legislation would provide $1 billion to “strengthen” Energy Department programs focused on determining the causes and impacts of high gas prices in the future, a $36 million boost from current levels. It also would provide $554 million for fossil energy research and development, including a new $25 million shale oil program “to both increase the efficiency and improve the impacts of shale oil recovery,” he said. So we are giving the DOE $1 billion to focus on determining the causes of high gas prices. Why don’t they look in the mirror! We know why gas prices are high. The American and global economies run on energy, and with demand increasing, we need to increase our supply. The DOE and other branches of government have promoted green energy and have hindered the private sector from developing our resources. That’s why gas prices are high. We don’t need to spend $1 billion to study the issue. In addition, why should we fund fossil fuel research programs? We should oppose government promotion of fossil fuels just like we oppose their peddling of green energy. Let the private sector handle the R&D. This is why we should abolish the DOE. We don’t need more regulations on energy development, nor do we need any help or subsidies from them either. Of course, the bill contains $1.5 billion for “energy efficiency and renewable energy programs” as well. With members like this on the appropriations committee, we will never reduce the size of government – even to pre-Obama levels. Another disconcerting problem that we will continue to focus on is the fact that many of these guys come from red districts. Here is the roster for that subcommittee along with their scores from Heritage Action and the PVI of their districts: Rodney Frelinghuysen – Chairman (NJ-5 R+7 ) – 46 Jerry Lewis – (CA-41 R+10 ) - 56 Mike Simpson (ID-2 R+17 ) – 53 Denny Rehberg (MT-At Large R+7 ) – 61 Rodney Alexander (LA-5 R+14 ) – 52 Steve Womack (AR-3 R+16 ) – 58 Alan Nunnelee (MS-1 R+14) – 73 If we continue to elect members from conservative districts who underperform so dramatically, and place them on the appropriations committee, we will never ever limit the size of government. Amazingly, speaking in reference to the draft legislation, Rep. Frelinghuysen said that “some of us believe it is time to pull the government back from such a strong involvement in the private sector.” Folks, you can’t make this stuff up.

House GOP Appropriators Continue to Grow Government
The Ted Cruz campaign has released a new video detailing the timeline of the Fast and Furious scandal: I’m an avid news consumer, but the Cruz video really drove home to me just how deeply the Obama administration is in it in this scandal. Full transcript is below the fold. Here’s more from the campaign: Shocking revelations keep coming in the “Fast and Furious” scandal. How deep was the corruption? Did Eric Holder and Janet Napolitano lie? Have the mainstream media been complicit in a cover up? Will Attorney General Holder and the Obama Administration ever come clean? Transcript: Anderson Cooper: Newly uncovered memos saying about the botched ATF operation we’ve been reporting called Fast & Furious. Sharyl Attkisson: Fast & Furious allowed thousands of weapons to be sold to suspected traffickers. Cooper: Instead of tracing them, the ATF lost track of them… Attkisson: …and fall into the hands of Mexican drug cartels. Unidentified man: The gangs have the money and the weapons to fight back. Cooper: We’re not talking about a dozen or even a couple hundred guns. Sheriff Paul Babeu: 200+ people have been killed by them. Cooper: We’re talking about 1000′s of weapons. Bob Schieffer: It appears that Attorney General Eric Holder knew a lot more about it than he recently told Congress. Attkisson: Attorney General Eric Holder was sent briefings on the controversial fast & furious operation… Eric Holder (on May 3 2011): I probably heard about Fast & Furious for the first time over the last few weeks. Attkisson: …as far back as July 2010. Bill Hemmer: They think Holder is purposely misleading Congress. Congressman Jason Chaffetz: At the very highest levels of the Department of Justice, they knew exactly what was happening. Barack Obama: There…have been problems. Ted Cruz: The Fast & Furious program we had our federal government selling firearms to violent criminals, firearms that were subsequently used to kill Americans. As someone who’s spent an awful lot of my adult life in law enforcement, I mean it’s just breathtaking. I called for us to investigate whether Eric Holder the Attorney General, what he knew and when he knew it. There needs to be accountability. If he deliberately lied to congress and if he did he should be removed from office and he should possibly face criminal prosecution. This is an administration that thinks it’s above the law, that it’s not bound by the law. And he will go around Congress and he will ignore the will of the people to force his agenda down our throats. And we have got to reign that in. We need strong conservative fighters in the senate. I am going to help lead this fight to stop the Obama agenda, to dramatically shrink the size and power of the federal government and restore our constitution. This is a fight for our country.
