Despite Virginia’s rightward shift since 2009, at least one poll suggests that Sen. Jim Webb would start out a 2012 reelection race in decent shape. Public Policy Polling, a Democratic firm, found that Webb would lead former Sen. George Allen by 49 percent to 45 percent, Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling by 49-38, and Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli by 49-39. If Webb were to bow out, former Gov. Tim Kaine would lead Allen 50-44, Bolling 48-41, and Cuccinelli 50-39. Former Congressman Tom Perriello, however, would struggle to hold the seat for the Democrats. I’d be interested in seeing what other firms, like Rasmussen, have to say about the race. Webb won the seat from Allen by a 0.3 percent margin in 2006, and I speculated in a recent column for the main site that he would have trouble holding it next time.

Republicans won three major victories in Virginia’s 2009 off-year election cycle: Bob McDonnell won against Creigh Deeds for governor; Bill Bolling won against Jody Wagner for lieutenant governor; Ken T. Cuccinell won against Stephen C. Shannon for attorney general.
Virginia goes under the hopenchange bus and onto Obama’s enemies list! (not really, I hope).
