Remember just a few days ago when AFL-CIO boss Richard Trumka told C-Span viewers that his federation was only providing support, places to meet, water, food, but NO money ? Well, it turns out the AFL-CIO has vowed to provide legal support and is also encouraging people to be arrested… So, did Richard Trumka lie about the NO money part? After all, someone is paying the attorneys’ fees. You know, when two of the nation’s most powerful union bosses attack an idea on the same day, it says three things: First, it means that the union bosses are following the GOP candidates very closely; second, an idea that strikes their sacred cows makes them nervous; and, third, there’s probably something to the idea that is worth looking further into. Apparently, Herman Cain’s plan to create “opportunity zones” as part of his “999″ plan is something that makes AFL-CIO boss Richard Trumka and Teamsters boss James P. Hoffa uneasy, both of whom seem fine keeping lower income Americans unemployed and poor, as long as it doesn’t disturb their union fiefdoms. According to Fox News : Taking aim at minimum wage laws, union protections, and even local building codes, Herman Cain has put the finishing touches on the last missing piece of his signature “9-9-9” plan – an elaborate proposal to create “opportunity zones” in inner-city America that the GOP presidential candidate will unveil during a major campaign appearance in Detroit on Friday morning. [snip] To qualify for zone status under Cain’s plan, a given jurisdiction will have to enact policies the unions consider anathema – such as the elimination of the minimum wage , the provision of school vouchers , or the declaration of a zone as a “right-to-work” area . Leading figures in organized labor swiftly attacked the Cain proposal. Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa told Fox News in an emailed statement: “Herman Cain’s ‘Opportunity Zones’ appear to be an opportunity for corporate America to exploit workers and turn the United States into a third-world country.” [Emphasis added.] It probably isn’t worth mentioning to Hoffa that America’s multi-trillion dollar debt, the Obama Administration’s attacks on business (urged and coordinated with union bosses), as well as the policies promulgated by the Left for the last 80 years are driving the nation to third-world faster than a Teamster-driven truck. Cain’s proposal also drew fire from AFL-CIO boss Richard Trumka . Unfortunately for those who live in what could be ‘opportunity zones,’ union bosses seem to want to keep the unemployed and impoverished under the union yoke. Instead of holding people in poor areas hostage to unions, perhaps it’s time to consider giving opportunities to those who otherwise have none. _________________ “I bring reason to your ears, and, in language as plain as ABC, hold up truth to your eyes.” Thomas Paine, December 23, 1776 Cross-posted on LaborUnionReport.com

Apparently, the squatters protesters holed up in lower Manhattan’s Zuccotti Park are a slothful and dirty bunch. Or, to put it in more PC terms, as the owners of the park, Brookfield Partners, stated in a flyer: “The manner in which Zuccotti Park has been used for the past several weeks has created unsanitary conditions.” As a result, the park that has housed the Neo-Com protesters for the last several weeks is scheduled to get a badly-needed cleaning on Friday morning. Unsanitary Conditions At Protesters’ Park: MyFoxNY.com [Click here if you cannot view the video.] Unsurprisingly, the squatters of Zuccotti Park are upset at the fact that their hovel needs a bath, insisting, according to CNN , that they will not be moving for the clean up. “Come tomorrow morning, we will passively resist and make it as difficult a process to remove us as possible,” said Occupy Wall Street spokesman Tyler Combelic. “It’s not an occupation if you can’t occupy the park.” Of course not. You can’t be a squatter if you can’t squat. Even the AFL-CIO’s big boss, Dick Trumka weighed in on behalf of the Zuccotti squatters, stating that “Mayor Bloomberg runs the risk of standing on the wrong side of history tomorrow.” In what may be one of the strangest twists of logic, Trumka’s AFL-CIO launched an online petition urging people to sign its petition “in defense of the protesters and their First Amendment rights.” According to the AFL-CIO’s petition, “New York Mayor Bloomberg will effectively evict the Occupy Wall Street protesters from their home in Zuccotti Park .” Somehow, in its delusional effort to abrogate private property rights , the nation’s largest federation of labor unions has turned protesters’ unlawful occupation of a park into an issue of “eviction” of the protesters’ “home.” It would be rather curious to see what the AFL-CIO bosses’ reaction would be if several hundred Tea Party protesters occupied the front of the AFL-CIO’s building for a few weeks. Would the union bosses try to have the protesters ‘evicted,’ or would they respect the protesters’ First Amendment rights and let them stay? ________________ “I bring reason to your ears, and, in language as plain as ABC, hold up truth to your eyes.” Thomas Paine, December 23, 1776 Cross-posted on LaborUnionReport.com

Undercover at #OccupyCleveland

On October 7, 2011, in Barack Obama, Uncategorized, by Linda

[promoted from the diaries] On Thursday, a friend and I made the trip to downtown Cleveland to check out the #OccupyCleveland protest. The Facebook page  predicted there would be 800-ish people attending, but the actual number on opening day was closer to 200.  We dressed to blend in with the crowd so we could fully embrace the experience, spending the better part of the day with the protesters. The first thing we noticed was that this event was barely planned. #OccupyCleveland had a few individuals who appeared to be coordinating the day’s events, but it was clear there was no schedule and there was no real preparation for the adult pajama party that was supposed to happen that night. As we eavesdropped on conversations and asked around, we discovered that the coordinators were unsure about whether they would be permitted to camp at the park – they were negotiating most of the day with City of Cleveland officials and City Council members.  In the end, the best deal they could get was permission to sleep on the sidewalks as long as they weren’t blocking any walkways or businesses. To their credit, they were very intent upon obeying the laws and respecting law enforcement. They emphasized that law enforcement officials were part of the 99%.  Well, for now, anyway. There were warnings from the leaders about what might happen if anyone so much as stepped outside a crosswalk. There was no food supply planned except for a small stash they were giving away after the first hour. They were Tweeting throughout the day that they were accepting food  handouts  donations. We were grateful for our free Anarchist Apples and Che Cheetos and lounged around on a blanket for an impromptu picnic with the rest of the slackers.  The only restroom facilities available were in the Federal building across the street. We were told they “had to let us in” as long as we had an ID. However, after hours, they will be left without running water or toilets. Lake Erie’s a half mile away, so maybe that’s the plan? This was the entire food stash. Most had already been given away by 3 PM. We sat in on the Tech Team meeting and discovered that although they had plans for a cell phone charging station, they realized they had no source of electricity and city ordinances prohibited them from having electric generators in the park. Plus they didn’t have extension cords. Oopsies. It was a mostly white, age-diverse crowd. The reality is that there were two completely different protests occurring simultaneously. Check out the bipolar selection of photos below: Note “Communist” fine print I don't remember the last time I've been somewhere with so many smokers SB5 is Ohio's union reform bill. The unions have a referendum on the ballot to repeal the bill Nice tribute to Capitalist Steve Jobs Abolish Capitalism As you can see, the unions were well-represented at this protest.  Rather than young, disaffected college students, the featured speakers were from the traditional arms of the Democratic Party. There was a woman from the SEIU, who called herself a Community Organizer. There was someone from the AFL-CIO and a representative from Rep. Dennis Kucinich’s office. There was an activists urging protesters to vote against Issue 2 (Gov. Kasich’s union reform bill, which the unions are trying to repeal) and against Issue 3 (the Healthcare Freedom Amendment). Someone also urged us to sign the petitions being circulated to put a measure on the ballot to repeal the recent election reform laws passed by the GOP-controlled legislature. We were approached several times by various people circulating these petitions. And of course, what protest (of any kind) would be complete without this guy?: When someone introduced a representative from Moveon.org, I’m not sure what I expected, but I did not expect a white-haired man in his 70′s.  He wandered up to the microphone and said – I really don’t know what, these speeches were SO boring – something and then came back and stood near me. He leaned over to a woman about his age who was perhaps his wife and said, “Was that OK?” She nodded in approval. Then he said, “I’m thinking maybe I should get some business cards that say “Moveon.org.” I think that would be a good idea.” Wait, what? This is the great and terrible Moveon.org? This old man who had nothing even mildly interesting to say and failed to get more than a yawn out of the loosely gathered crowd?  Well, kids, pay no attention to the man behind the curtain or you might see that this is a bunch of smoke and mirrors, just like the rest of these “protests.” Eventually, one of the leaders told the crowd that it was time for the march that was planned. They said that anyone who had an opinion about where we should march should come to the microphone to share their thoughts and we would have a democratic vote.  Sheesh! I briefly considered proposing a march to Kapitalist Krispy Kreme, but restrain myself to keep from blowing my cover. Since only one person actually had an opinion, the majority decided to march to Public Square and City Hall. About half a block into the march and the “This is what democracy looks like” chants,  I had had enough. We had marched passed several construction workers in orange vests – people who were actually working . I looked up at the buildings around me and thought about the people working hard to earn paychecks for their families, including my own husband, who was working in one of those buildings to provide for our family. I felt sick to my stomach. I felt like I was betraying my country and everything I believed in. It was one thing to stand on the outskirts of that group, listening to the speeches, but I could not march with them and become one of them.  We fell out of the march and headed back to our cars. On that walk back to the parking lot, my friend and I reflected on the huge contrast between this group of protesters and those at the Tea Parties. Even though Tea Party members are angry and frustrated with the government and taxes and a host of other issues at times, the rallies are overwhelmingly uplifting and positive events. They are hopeful and focus on positive solutions. Even the music is designed to inspire and encourage.  #OccupyCleveland, in contrast, was the opposite. In was depressing, negative, unfocused, and offered no solutions. Add mindlessly boring to the list as well. There’s nothing worse than a completely unplanned, day-long open mic program.  I do, however, kind of like my fake tattoo.  I think I might keep it for a few more days. Saturday, marked the second week of the #OccupyWallSt protests. With the endorsements of union bosses now firmly in their back pockets, protesters in New York celebrated the anniversary of their campout in a New York City park by shutting down the Brooklyn Bridge. This, of course, led to the NYPD to arrest many of the—more than 700, according to the New York Times . In a tense showdown above the East River, the police arrested more than 700 demonstrators from the Occupy Wall Street protests who took to the roadway as they tried to cross the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday afternoon. The police said it was the marchers’ choice that led to the enforcement action. While some of the Neo-Communists (“ Neo-Coms “) are purposely depriving themselves of shelter and (in the case of yesterday’s arrests) freedom out of sheer ideology, at least one appears to be getting paid—handsomely—to be part of the Marxist madness. Meet Jeff Rae *: Among Saturday’s arrestees was one Jeff Rae ( @JeffRae ), from Washington, DC.  Mr. Rae describes himself on Twitter as a “ rabble rouser, agitator, organizer, labor activist. ” According to Mr. Rae, he was arrested for ‘failure to obey order, prohibited use of roadway, and blocking traffic .’ [In other words, Mr. Rae was being a disobedient civilian .] Apparently, the NYPD allowed the detainees to have their cell phones while being incarcerated since Mr. Rae continued updating his Twitter followers (and whomever else happened by) with tweets about his hardships in the hoosegow : Things going slow still in cell hoping to get out soon 4 people to a 1 man cell.  # occupywallstreet Jail photo right now  # occupywallstreet http://yfrog.com/kgokinlj Our cell does not have running water but toliet works . Cell next to us had a non working toliet  # occupywallstreet Police tell us our Singing in jail will add charges  # occupywallstreet Now, by reading Mr. Rae’s tweets , one could be left with the impression that Mr. Rae is just your average, everyday left-wing ideologue that gets himself arrested “for the cause.” If that is your impression, you are partially correct. To be sure, Mr. Rae is a left-wing ideologue. However, Mr. Rae does not appear to be just an average left-wing ideologue. In fact, it appears Mr. Rae is a professional rabble rouser, agitator, organizer, and labor activist. [See Agitpropist .] In fact, it appears that Mr. Rae is the same Jeffrey Ray who is employed as the Director of New Media by the Transport Workers Union in Washington, DC—the same union that joined the #OccupyWallSt  protests last week. And, as a professional rabble rouser, agitator, organizer and labor activist , Mr. Rae isn’t one of those downtrodden masses for whom the Neo-Communist protests are allegedly meant for since Mr Rae seems to be doing quite well for himself… In fact, as many Americans have been losing their jobs and homes during the Great Recession, Mr. Rae has actually seen his income as a  professional rabble rouser, agitator, organizer and labor activist increase substantially —from $69,353 in 2008 to $118,534 in 2010. Mr. Rae also appears to be the same Jeffrey Rae who traveled to Bejing in 2008 and was arrested and detained for six days, as well as traveled to Wisconsin earlier this year: Jeff Rae, 30, who works for the Transport Workers Union in Washington , said he arrived in Madison to gather intelligence on the controversy. His union sees Wisconsin as the first in a series of battles nationwide, he said. “This is Ground Zero,” Rae said. “Ohio’s next.” Like Wisconsin, Ohio is looking to cuts in spending to balance its budget. In Ohio, however, the odds are seen favoring organized labor more than in Wisconsin, Rae said. Who says rabble rousing isn’t profitable? * NOTE: Mr. Rae has not responded on Twitter to confirm or deny if he is the same rabble rousing, agitating, organizing, labor activist that the Transport Workers Union employs as its Director of New Media. ________________ “I bring reason to your ears, and, in language as plain as ABC, hold up truth to your eyes.” Thomas Paine, December 23, 1776 Cross-posted at LaborUnionReport.com and BigGovernment.com Related Posts: The AFL-CIO’s Orwellian Boss To #OccupyWallSt Protesters: Daddy loves you, kids… …And, So It Begins: Unions & Professional Left To Join #OccupyWallSt Protesters #OccupyWallSt: Just A Saturday Stroll Through The Park… #OccupyWallSt Day Three: Neo-Coms Call For The ‘Deprivatization of Everything’…
