This evening, USA Today published a story describing the law-breaking participants in the “Occupy movement” as a “violent fringe”. But how can a movement whose entire existence is predicated upon breaking the law be anything but criminal and destined to incite violence? The mere concept of this “occupation” promotes the idea that the occupiers would perpetrate an act that is bound to break multiple laws in virtually every location where these people have erected their disease- and crime-infested tent cities. So at what point does anecdotal evidence indicate a trend and show that this is not “fringe” behavior? When do hundreds of incidents of mass lawbreaking, violence, rape and murder demonstrate that this anti-social behavior is standard procedure from these crowds and not the exception? BigGovernment.com is maintaining a running total of the violations rung up by the Occupy crew. Just a sampling of the Occupiers’ stunts: NY: 10/1/2011 — Police Arrest More Than 700 Protesters on Brooklyn Bridge Madison, WI: 10-27-2011 — Madison Occupiers Lose Permit Due to Public Masturbation Phoenix: 10/28/2011 — Flier at Occupy Phoenix Asks, “When Should You Shoot a Cop?” NY: 10/18/2011 — Thieves Preying on Fellow Protesters NY: 10/9/2011 — Stinking up Wall Street: Protesters Accused of Living in Filth as Shocking Pictures Show One Demonstrator Defecating on a POLICE CAR NY: 10/7/2011 — Occupiers Rush Police … More Cleveland: 10/18/2011 — ‘ Occupy Cleveland’ Protester Alleges She Was Raped NY: 10/10/2011 — ‘Increasingly Debauched’: Are Sex, Drugs & Poor Sanitation Eclipsing Occupy Wall Street? Seattle: 10/18/2011 — Man Accused of Exposing Self to Children Arrested 10/12/2011 — Iran Supports ‘Occupy Wall Street’ Portland: 10/16/2011 – #OccupyPortland Protester Desecrates Memorial To U.S. War Dead Portland: 10/15/2011 — #OccupyPortland Protesters Sing “F*** The USA” There are a couple hundred more and undoubtedly far more that have not seen the light of day, considering the Occupy folks’ tendency to hide the violations . Yet despite the hundreds of incidents that have occurred across the nation, local law enforcement and governmental authorities have been hesitant to enforce the laws and jail the violators. Given that many of these “protests” are occurring in large cities that are dominated by left-wing politicians, I suppose there’s not a lot of surprise there. What is interesting, however, is the double standard between the Occupy groups and the Tea Party groups, which the mainstream media and the Vice President are fond of comparing to the Occupy criminals. Dana Loesch documented the disparity between how St. Louis city leaders and law enforcement officials treated Tea Party protests versus the Occupiers. Tea Party: permits and fees. Occupy: no permits, no fees, used city power and property to live for days/weeks, and only kicked them out when it was time to hang Christmas lights in Kiener Plaza. But of course the Occupy groups never had any desire to follow laws, get permits, etc. They are lawless. This is their brand. That there is rampant violence and other violations in the so-called “fringe” of the Occupy crowd should surprise no one. They came to break the law and they did. In the USA Today article about “the fringe”, the author comes perilously close to addressing the issue: Violence undercuts public sympathy for the protesters’ cause, says Terry Madonna , a polling expert at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa. He wonders whether Occupy, a movement that has no publicly identified leaders or hierarchy, can stop such violence within or outside its ranks. Of course they can’t stop the violence, and it has nothing to do with whether there are leaders or a hierarchy. Lawlessness leads to lawlessness. Unless they adopt a lawful approach to making their point (and I fully support their right to protest – within the bounds of the law ) there will be no end to the escalation of their violent behavior, especially when the authorities stand idly by and allow it to happen. The union-cowed , left-leaning politicians and law enforcement agencies that have permitted these “Occupiers” – fringe or not – to flagrantly break the law are complicit in each and every one of these violations and should be held accountable for their (in)actions.

There’s been a surprising number of people that on the right that have actually issued limited support for the Occupy Wall Street movement, myself included. I even wrote an entire article announcing my support of the movement , not because I agreed with their politics or their odd sense of community, but rather because I hoped this movement would move to push the Democrat party closer to its core ideology as the Tea Party has been working on doing with Republicans. I was not alone in this extension of good will. John Sexton at Verum Serum was also ready to extend them the benefit of the doubt : Already there are signs that OWS is starting to mature. I saw a video recently of a speaker at one event (I don’t recall where) who gave a fairly good political sermon on bondage in Egypt and freedom under Moses. It was a bit forced for my taste, but it was also fairly coherent by OWS standards. I don’t think OWS is there yet, but I think they’ll get there if they don’t self-destruct by starting a riot. Even Matt Kibbe of FreedomWorks saw a glimmer of hope that these protestors might not be idiots: My first instinct was to sympathize with Occupy Wall Street (OWS). At the time of the initial protests, I was in Italy giving a lecture on the tea party ethos to graduate students participating in the Istituto Bruno Leoni’s annual Mises Seminar. I was getting reports of OWS signs that I had often see at Tea Party protests, such as “End the Fed” and “Stop Crony Capitalism.” And, much like Sexton, Kibbe warned that the path OWS could lay out, would be destructive to their cause. In contrast OWS, whose ranks represent a small fraction of total tea party protestors, has struggled to maintain civility or to even identify a unifying sense of purpose in their uprising. At Zuccotti Park in lower Manhattan, there is stealing, property damage and arrests often provoked by protestors wanting conflict with the police. Real people—not members of the so-called 1%—are being hurt as their small businesses are impacted and their property destroyed. So, it appears that all of our hopes have been dashed. From threatening to stab reporters in the neck , to blatant anti-semitism , to very odd group chanting , Occupy Wall Street appears more and more to be devoid of the ideological passion I’d hoped they’d have, and leans more towards the childish, tantrum throwing, entitlement expecting rioters that we had become familiar with through the protests in Europe these last few years. As Sexton warned above, rioting would be the quickest way to derail any legitimacy, and the OWS crowd has decided that’s precisely the path they will take. Of course the narrative that the OWS crowd might has some control issues will be heard almost exclusively on the right. The national media will exist primarily to defend against that concept. But I think it’s safe to say that this is not the movement we’ve been waiting for. This is not the movement that will push the left further left as we push further right to help differentiate the parties in a way that might actually cause moderates to make a real decision for once. I patiently wait for worthy adversaries in the arena of ideas. This movement is not them.

You know, when this video from Reason.tv came out, I invoked the 48 Hour Rule as a matter of course. For those who don’t know, the 48 Hour Rule is one of those useful rules of thumb that people come up with to make sure that they don’t get burned on a story; if something sounds too good to be true, or too bad to be true, or even just too much to be true, it’ll probably be debunked pretty quickly. 48 hours is usually enough time to establish that. And I was optimistically certain that this was the case, here: surely the LA school system hadn’t really employed somebody calling for the expulsion of the Jews . “ I think that the Zionist Jews who are running these big banks and our Federal Reserve, which is not run by the federal government, they need to be run out of this country .” – Patricia McAllister I know. I am charmingly naive. If you’re wondering, the LAUSD really did hire this winner ( as a substitute math teacher ) (link via PJ Tatler’s comments ); and if you click the link here you’ll get another link to a quite vile site that should explode, once and for all, the ridiculous argument that minorities cannot be racists. But let’s drill down to the really nauseating portion of all of this: it’s the way that Ms. Patricia McAllister is utterly unconcerned and matter-of-fact about the way she’s casually calling for the expulsion of the Jews . Because let’s not pretend that the ‘Zionist’ tag means a damned thing, in this context: McAllister thinks that the Jews run Wall Street, she wants those Jews gone, and she doesn’t consider them Americans in any way that matters. And she’s apparently welcome at Occupy LA. Because they certainly haven’t tried to disassociate themselves from McAllister’s remarks, either.- And yes, they have to. The rule was set during the first wave of Tea Party protests: police your own, or you will be lambasted in the national media . I insist that this rule be followed for the Left’s cargo cult imitation, as well. Even if the ranting is about the Jews. Moe Lane ( crosspost ) [UPDATE] : I actually agree with Erick : we need to bring in the sane portion of Occupy Wall Street. Just let this portion shrivel up and flake away in the sun…

After some quiet time following last year’s departure of union bosses Andy Stern and Anna Burger, it appears the purple behemoth known as Service Employees International Union, has been quietly plotting its own Egyptian-style revolution. Given the ever-shrinking private-sector union membership ranks, as well as the realization that its political influence has shrunk as well, the SEIU’s plan is apparently to engage in a class-warfare based campaign. According to a Politico piece , SEIU’s plan (called “Fight for a Fair Economy”) and will reach outside the union movement in order to “mobilizing underpaid, underemployed and unemployed workers” and “channeling anger about jobs into action for positive change.” SEIU President Mary Kay Henry acknowledged in an interview that the new strategy, which would include aggressive outreach to non-union members, is “a risk.” “We felt like we were called in this moment to roll the dice and to think about how to use our members resources for the greatest hope for changing members lives,” she said. “ I hope what people will see is more of what we all witnessed in Madison. … more people in the streets making demands about what kind of America we want to see.” [snip] The plan does not revolve as centrally around the 2012 elections as the SEIU’s political program did in 2008, when it was the largest outside supporter of candidate Obama. It does, however, aim to organize public campaigns for economic issues around “national flash points” including this August’s recess, corporate shareholder meetings next spring, and the debates and conventions next year. Henry was elected last year with a promise to reorient the union, and some Democratic officials worry the change will mean a less intense focus on their party’s needs. It appears to be an expansion of the plans announced earlier this year when the Wall Street Journal noted the SEIU’s campaign to target specific cities . The campaign—called Fight for a Fair Economy—will focus on mobilizing mostly low-wage minority workers in 10 to 15 cities, including Cleveland, Milwaukee, Miami and Detroit , according to the memo reviewed by The Wall Street Journal. The SEIU wants the effort to peak in the summer of 2012, with events at primaries, town-hall meetings and other campaign venues, according to the memo. SEIU spokeswoman Inga Skippings declined to confirm that the memo reflected the final plans of the union, which has two million members, and said its strategy continues to evolve. The cities designated for the campaign have high concentrations of SEIU members and are in states where governors have proposed cutting benefits to public-sector workers amid worries over pension costs and broader budget woes. In some of the targeted states, lawmakers are considering “right to work” legislation that would eliminate laws making union membership mandatory whenever a union is formed at an employer. [snip] The board member predicted the effort would cost “tens of millions” of dollars ; the SEIU spent more than $70 million on the 2008 elections. Other than an attempt at countering the Tea Party protests that emerged in 2009, it appears the SEIU’s plan won’t be anything more than a loud, obnoxious waste of its members’ dues. Then again, what’s new? ________________ “I bring reason to your ears, and, in language as plain as ABC, hold up truth to your eyes.” Thomas Paine, December 23, 1776 X-posted .

Just as Obama said to a minister that deciding whether life begins at conception is "above my pay grade," I would not dare to predict the results of whatever has happened let alone what the United States should have done in reaction to the so-called "protests" in the Middle East and Africa right now: it's above my pay grade. But I do know "protest" when I see it and for the most part, our American media and chattering class is all too willing to declare just about anything it deems worthy as "protest" and anyone in the streets as a "protester." Now when I was but a teenager growing up in Washington D.C. in the late sixties and early seventies, our city was the epicenter of "protests," mostly for (black) civil rights and against the Vietnam undeclared war. From the Moratorium to End the War in Vietnam in November, 1969 to "May Day," in 1971, as a typical teenager at the time, I joined in what were termed as "protests." Now the former was a peaceful protest: peaceful to the point of boredom and any effort by breakaway "protesters" to incite violence was booed down by the vast majority of the marchers. The latter was not a "protest"; it was a call to "civil disobedience" if not outright violence. The former had very, very few arrests: the latter resulted in thousands of arrests, some justified, some not. My "arrest" at May Day was not: I was among the many stragglers who found themselves simply walking on the streets of Washington (I was walking home through Georgetown to my family's home in Cleveland Park) who were summarily picked up by U.S. Park Police and the Metropolitan Washington Police Department's notorious "CDU" (Civil Disobedience Unit) and taken near RFK Stadium. I had only been there to cheer on Sonny Jurgensen and Billy Kilmer at Redskins games. Although many of my "comrades" at May Day participated in violence or civil disobedience (such as attempting to block roads and bridges), I did nothing illegal except perhaps maybe smoke pot and listen to the Jefferson Airplane on The Mall. I was doing absolutely nothing disorderly walking on Wisconsin Avenue in May of 1971 when a paddy wagon pulled up, two U.S. Park Police jumped out, opened up the doors and threw my longhaired butt in the back with about a dozen other people. We all swapped stories and they were all the same: all we had been doing was walking on the streets of D.C. All of us changed our names to "John Doe". Now people get arrested all the time, most often intentionally, at so-called "protests" in the United States: from Members of Congress at the South African embassy, to pro-lifers, to gay members of the U.S. military, some of whom recently chained themselves to the White House fence. But it is most often reported if not depicted by the media that those people were arrested for "protesting" this or that: that is not true. There are no laws that I know of that make it a crime to simply protest: there are laws that make it a crime to trespass, chain yourself to government property, impede traffic, or assemble in an unlawful manner. How ironic is it that the media proudly reports that President Obama -- ever the eternal community organizer -- is speaking out on behalf of those in Egypt and elsewhere who are "protesting," even if some may not just be protesting but inciting or participating in violence (much of the televised coverage I have seen has shown both the police and the "protesters" engaging in violence), yet the same media depicts the past year of Tea Party protests as some kind of anarchist, ruthless, violence-inspiring gathering of uniformed thugs. How much did the media focus in on one or two people who showed up packing at a Tea Party rally and, gasp, those horrible, racist signs that depicted the President in an unflattering manner? To the best of my knowledge, there were no arrests for violence nor any actual gunfire at any Tea Party rallies, the areas where the rallies took place were left spotless versus the piles of trash and garbage left after Obama's inauguration and Ed Schultz's MSNBC Rules Rally. The one Tea Party rally I observed in person (I am neither a Tea Party member nor necessarily a supporter) was populated by middle-aged folks who for the most part looked like tourists from Kansas wanting to know where the Vietnam Memorial or a water fountain were able to be located. Contrast that with the annual World Bank/IMF "protesters" who show up in Washington and elsewhere with masks, work gloves, lawyers and chains, ready to rock and roll with the police. Whether or not the "protests" that have taken place in Egypt will satisfy the bloodthirsty American media's litmus test for legendary violence and brutality (the now proverbial Tiananmen Square slaughter) is anybody's guess: to some, the existing government's reaction to the "protests" already has and will far surpass Commie China's response. I just know that what is going on now has far surpassed "protest": it has become armed rebellion. The real question is who will be providing the means toward armed revolution and for what purpose: will it be the Muslim Brotherhood, Iran's secret police, or a truly democratic, peace-loving group of patriots. Remember: Iran's Islamic revolution started out with kidnapping and "protests" and ended up with a tyrannical, Islamic based government. Will whatever replaces these toppled governments be much better and will they in turn allow future "protests" the media will embrace?

Here’s my post-election column. I’ll continue to update the results post here as we wait on key AK, WA, CO, AZ, and Florida returns. The grass-roots conservative midterm message: No surrender, no compromise, no capitulation. Share you thoughts! *** Take Your Olive Branch and Shove It, Democrats by Michelle Malkin Creators Syndicate Copyright 2010 On the eve of a historic midterm election upheaval, President Barack Obama tried to walk back his gratuitous slap at Americans who oppose his radical progressive agenda. “I probably should have used the word ‘opponents’ instead of ‘enemies’ to describe political adversaries,” Obama admitted Monday. “Probably”? Here is an ironclad certainty: It’s too little too late for the antagonist-in-chief to paper over two years of relentless Democratic incivility and hate toward his domestic “enemies.” Voters have spoken: They’ve had enough. Enough of the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize winner’s rhetorical abuse. Enough of his feints at bipartisanship. Whatever the final tally, this week’s turnover in Congress is a GOP mandate for legislative pugilism, not peace. Voters have had enough of big government meddlers “getting things done.” They are sending fresh blood to the nation’s Capitol to get things undone . Just two short years ago, Obama campaigned as the transcendent unifier. “Young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled, Americans have sent a message to the world that we have never been just a collection of red states and blue states,” he proclaimed . “We have been and always will be the United States of America.” It’s been an Us vs. Them freefall ever since. “We don’t mind the Republicans joining us,” Obama taunted a few weeks ago. “They can come for the ride, but they gotta sit in back .” “They’re counting on young people staying home and union members staying home and black folks staying home ,” the fear-mongering agent of hope and change jeered on the campaign trail last month. “ You would think they’d be saying thank you ,” he sneered last April, when millions turned out for the nationwide Tax Day tea party protests. “ I want them just to get out of the way ” and “don’t do a lot of talking,” he scoffed in response to prescient critics of the federal trillion-dollar stimulus boondoggle. In addition to labeling GOP opponents of his open-borders policies “enemies” who needed to be “punished” by Latino voters, Obama accused them — that is, us — of lacking patriotism. “ Those aren’t the kinds of folks who represent our core American values ,” he told viewers of the Spanish-language network Univision. Democratic leaders have taken their cue from Team Obama’s persistent politics of polarization. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer called vocal citizens who protested the federal health care takeover bill during the town hall revolts of 2009 “ un-American ,” too. Remember? “These disruptions are occurring because opponents are afraid not just of differing views — but of the facts themselves. Drowning out opposing views is simply un-American,” Pelosi and Hoyer blasted in an op-ed piece for USA Today last summer. “Drowning out the facts is how we failed at this task for decades.” This from the woman who called for a vengeful government investigation of grassroots opponents of the Ground Zero mosque. Obama’s pal Rep. Alan Grayson of Florida, whom the president hailed as an “ outstanding ” member of Congress, accused Republicans of wanting elderly people to “die quickly” and of presiding over a “holocaust in America.” Vice President Joe Biden hailed Grayson as a “guy who doesn’t back away from a fight, and doesn’t back down from what he believes in” and told him at a fundraiser: “We owe you one, buddy.” No mention of Grayson’s smear of a female Federal Reserve adviser as a “ K Street whore.” In California, entrenched incumbent jerk Pete Stark derided immigration enforcement activists at a town hall by asking: “Who are you going to kill today?” To an elderly constituent who opposed the health care bill, Stark retorted: “I wouldn’t dignify you by peeing on your leg. It wouldn’t be worth wasting the urine.” As voters who have been maligned by the ruling majority as stupid, unwashed, racist, selfish and violent headed to the polls Tuesday, Democrats released “talking points” attacking Republican leaders who “are not willing to compromise.” But “no compromise” is exactly the message that un-American Americans delivered to Washington this campaign season: No more compromising deals behind closed doors. No more compromising bailouts in times of manufactured crisis. No more compromising conservative principles for D.C. party elites. No more compromising the American economy for left-wing special interests. No more compromising transparency and ethics for bureaucratic self-preservation. Let us be clear, in case it hasn’t fully sunk into the minds of Obama and the trash-talking Democrats yet: You can take your faux olive branch and shove it. Thank you.
