CNN has suspended Roland Martin indefinitely for tweets he wrote during the Super Bowl which were construed as homophobic. In one tweet, Martin writes, "If a dude at your Super Bowl party is hyped about David Beckham's H&M underwear ad, smack the ish out of him, #superbowl." CNN stated, "Language that demeans is inconsistent with the values and culture of our organization, and is not tolerated." Yet in November 2010, it was Martin who wrote , "Maybe someone should kick Sarah Palin," after Palin criticized First Lady Michelle Obama's anti-obesity campaign. Did CNN reprimand Martin in way, shape or form? What do you think? Apparently language that demeans Sarah Palin (and conservatives in general) is not inconsistent with the values and culture at CNN and is not only tolerated but encouraged.

If you've ever wanted to hang out with the next President of the United States, you'll have your chance this weekend at D.C.'s Marriott Wardman Park Hotel. The three top candidates for the Republican nomination -- former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum -- will speak Friday at the 39th Conservative Political Action Conference . Sarah Palin will give the final keynote speech on Saturday and, if that's not enough to excite your interest, the protesters from "Occupy DC" have promised to show up and keep things lively. On their website , Occupy DC vows "non-violent resistance" at this year's CPAC, aiming to "make this a conference the attendees will never forget." And Occupy DC calls CPAC "a who's who of dastardly politicians... another gathering of bigots, media mouthpieces, corrupt politicians, and their 1 percent elite puppet masters," who will "attempt to perpetuate the radical right wing's imperialist ideologies... pursuing its racist, sexist, patriarchal and exploitative agenda." Indeed, this is exactly what my friends and I have in mind when CPAC convenes Thursday. In between attending speeches, seminar panels and cocktail parties -- where our "elite puppet masters" will exhort us to perpetuate their "imperialist ideologies" -- we'll make occasional visits to the Marriott lobby, hoping to catch an entertaining glimpse of the clashes between police and smelly hippies from the Occupy DC encampments. What could be more fun than watching left-wing scum getting tased, pepper-sprayed and hauled away in handcuffs by the Metropolitan Police? CPAC is, as I have called it, " Mardi Gras for the Right ," a three-day annual festival celebrating everything conservatives hold dear, including free-market capitalism. And it is entirely fitting that this year's CPAC should be held at the posh Marriott Wardman Park, considering that two heirs to the Marriott fortune are among the billionaires who have donated money to Republican "super PACs." Alas, the Marriott brothers are supporting Romney, but we won't begrudge them that while we party with our friends in the VIP suites, gazing down from the balconies -- champagne glasses in hand -- at the Occupy DC protesters waving signs, chanting slogans and shivering in the cold on the sidewalks behind the police barricades. The conference annually attracts thousands of conservative activists from all over the country. Officials are hesitant to predict this year's total attendance. CPAC spokeswoman Kristy Campbell said Tuesday that advance registrations are on track for a 20 percent increase over last year's conference, which was the biggest ever. The first-ever CPAC appearance by Palin is certain to be a favorite event for many attendees. "We're thrilled to host the governor," said Campbell, noting that "logistical issues" had prevented Palin's attendance in previous years. And the ongoing presidential campaign also adds a special element of excitement to this year's conference. "I think, if you just look at where we are with the primary season… if you look at Friday, that's really going to be a day to highlight the conservative alternatives to Barack Obama," Campbell said of the three Republican candidates who will address CPAC. Campbell added that while a fourth candidate, Texas Rep. Ron Paul, was unable to attend because of a scheduling conflict, he will be represented by his son, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul. The CPAC stage will also feature former presidential candidates Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, and Atlanta businessman Herman Cain. In addition to the presidential candidates, conference attendees will also hear from a long list of Republican congressional luminaries, including South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker John Boehner, as well as the Republican governors of Virginia, Florida, Louisiana, and Wisconsin. There will also be speeches and seminar presentations by many leading conservative columnists, authors, talk-radio hosts and TV personalities including Ann Coulter, Andrew Breitbart, Laura Ingraham, Michael Medved, Craig Shirley, Oliver North, Jonah Goldberg, S.E. Cupp, Cal Thomas, Dana Loesch, Rich Lowry, Ed Morrissey, Matt Lewis, Roger Hedgecock, Mike Huckabee, Fred Thompson and Dinesh D'Souza. The American Spectator 's own Jeffrey Lord will appear on a Thursday morning panel discussion of "The Future of the Conservative Movement," and indeed, the future of the movement will be in heavy attendance at CPAC. "Every year we hold a job fair for young conservatives… a lot of people come here hoping to break into politics," Campbell said, noting that student passes for the conference are only $35. "More than half of the attendees who come to CPAC every year are students. This is a great opportunity for students to come out and get involved." Consider this ironic contrast: While conservative students who aspire to careers in politics will be inside CPAC attending job fairs and hearing paeans to the glories of free-market capitalism, outside the conference the left-wing protesters from "Occupy DC" will be complaining about economic woes they blame on what they call "another gathering of bigots." But what really annoys the Occupiers, I suspect, is their envious belief that the right-wingers at CPAC are having lots of fun. And in that belief, at least, they are absolutely correct.

A new friend and I were discussing the sad state of the Republican field on Saturday. We agreed that the current crop of candidates is wholly uninspiring. We also agreed that a Romney ticket, which seems very likely, could gain some excitement if he were to pick a young, articulate, energetic VP like Marco Rubio. “I would send him money if he picked Rubio,” I said. “It’s hard to imagine sending him money under any other circumstances. But if he picked Rubio, I would donate to Romney.” There are good reasons to think Marco Rubio would be a perfect VP candidate. He has the support of both the establishment and the Tea Party — a rarity in today’s divisive Republican politics. That ability to garner support from both factions of the party would be a key unifying force. Rubio would bring principle to a ticket that sadly seems to lack it otherwise. He cuts into Obama’s “Western strategy” (which is really a Latino strategy) and shows the party that we are not giving up on Latinos — but we are not giving up on conservatism either. And finally, Rubio is simply a galvanizing force: well-spoken and vigorous. I still remember the excitement I felt when John McCain picked Sarah Palin. But she proved prone to gaffes in unstructured settings. This was a manufactured media narrative, but she unfortunately played into it. Rubio wouldn’t. He would bring the excitement without the same negatives. My friend agreed, and it occurred to us that we should try to enforce this. That we should tell Romney: pick Rubio and I’ll send you a donation. Pick some tired mushy moderate like yourself and you get nothing. I’ll vote for you, sure — but you’re not getting a dime. Yes, I agreed, we should tell Romney that. So, I just did.

…here are a couple gems from two of the campaign’s most fervent, credibility-contorting cheerleaders, the “ detestable harpy “ ** and Jennifer Rubin. As noted earlier today , the harpy decided to go Full Romney in her column yesterday. Called “THREE CHEERS FOR ROMNEYCARE!,” the harpy declared Romney’s signature – and most problematic – legislative achievement to have been a victory for the constitution and for conservatism. As if that wasn’t enough on its own, Cold Warrior was kind enough to provide a link to the following video, which shows the “ detestable harpy ” at CPAC 2011 warning that a failure by Chris Christie to enter the presidential race would result in a Romney nomination and a GOP loss to President Obama in 2012: Evidently Christie’s refusal to enter the race so traumatized the harpy that she not only fled straight into the arms of the man she warned just last year would be a sure loser in the 2012 election, but that she sacrificed any intellectual integrity or consistency in doing so. (Actually, this is an excellent object lesson in the fungibility of such arcane ideas as “principle” and “consistency” when fame and attention are at stake!) When it comes to Rubin, well, not much needs to be said. The sad descent into self-parody by the Washington Post ‘s resident “conservative” blogger is well-known and as firmly evidenced as any event in recent media history. Despite this, Rubin still manages to outdo herself from time to time by posting even more grotesque mental contortions than usual – as can be seen in her commentary in the last 24 hours on the Donald Trump endorsement. When it had become conventional wisdom that The Donald was on the verge of endorsing Newt Gingrich for president, Rubin declared that the Trump endorsement was proof that Gingrich’s campaign was an utter joke, writing : Herman Cain, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Sarah Palin and now, it seems, Donald Trump have lined up behind Newt Gingrich. It’s convenient to have a candidate like Gingrich who attracts the unserious, the unpresidential, the uninformed and the unpalatable all in one convenient locale. It saves the time and effort needed to determine who is a credible Republican and who is not (Gingrich supporters). The move is yet another boost for Rick Santorum, who definitely is in the category of responsible and credible candidates (whatever you think of his views) and has been struggling to wean the base off its attraction to Gingrich. Now, of course, it turns out that The Donald, who as Dan Foster notes “is a tax-hiking, missile-defense-opposing, universal-health-care-advocating, eminent-domain abusing, Dem-donating clown,” will likely be endorsing Mitt Romney . Oops. First rule of holes be damned, I’m actually looking forward to seeing how Rubin tries to dig herself out of this one. ** I’m using Mike’s nickname for this individual in order to keep from giving her what she wants more than anything else: more attention and more repetition of her name in public fora.

"There's not much that Obama can really use to destroy Santorum." I like Rick Santorum better than Newt Gingrich too, Quin , but this statement suggests a lack of creativity. Obama would run against the impending Santorum theocracy and turn him into a red state cultural icon like Sarah Palin. That could backfire -- it will certainly fire up the conservative base and in light of the administration's recent HHS ruling , they can ill afford to be seen as declaring war on faithful Catholics -- but it could also help the Democrats recreate their 2008 turnout among liberals, young people, and even minorities (despite their relative social conservatism). As for the nomination, there are certainly anti-Romney majorities to be had in many states. They are virtually there for the taking. Santorum's enemy is the calendar. Romney has a campaign that is built to compete in multiple states and media markets simultaneously. Santorum does not. He needs to grind it out in states, taking advantage of free media and retail politics. We are entering the phase of the race where the candidates won't have weeks to work a single state. That's why it was important for a conservative candidate to emerge in the early states, while everyone was competing on more or less even terms. Both Gingrich and Santorum have failed to qualify for the ballot or submit full slates of delegates in states they could conceivably win. I'm not saying it's impossible to beat Romney. Mickey Mouse could beat him in many Southern primaries. But the race is moving in a direction that will make it harder.

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- George Soros, Goldman Sachs, and other forces of the "establishment" are conspiring to support Mitt Romney's presidential campaign, Newt Gingrich warned Republicans here Monday, as Floridians prepared to go to the polls in their state's crucial GOP primary. Referring to an interview that Soros -- a billionaire notorious for his funding of left-wing causes -- gave to Reuters last week in Davos, Switzerland, Gingrich summarized Soros as saying, "We think either Obama or Romney's fine, but Gingrich, he would change things." The anti-Gingrich cabal, said the former House Speaker, also includes investment banking giant Goldman Sachs, which backed President Obama four years ago and now -- having profited from taxpayer-funded Wall Street bailouts -- is bankrolling Romney's campaign attack ads. "Those ads are your money recycled to attack me," Gingrich told the hundreds gathered outside Page Field airport here. He cited no evidence that Goldman Sachs was in cahoots with Romney, and the opacity of the "super PACs" which are pumping millions into this Republican primary campaign makes it impossible either to prove or disprove Gingrich's depiction of the malevolent forces arrayed against him. Yet he repeated similar accusations in different forums throughout the day -- on ABC in the morning, on Fox News in the afternoon, and at each of the five stops on his final whirlwind tour of the Sunshine State -- as if endeavoring to convince his supporters that they are victims of a vast conspiracy. Newt seemed to be providing a pre-emptive excuse for what polls indicate will be a decisive defeat for him in Tuesday's winner-take-all primary. Six polls within the past week have shown Gingrich trailing Romney by double-digit margins in Florida -- the Real Clear Politics average of Florida polls had Romney's margin at 12.5 points Monday -- a striking reversal of Gingrich's advantage after he beat Romney handily in South Carolina ten days ago. (See " The End of Inevitability," Jan. 22.) The rival campaigns suddenly seem to have switched roles. Gingrich's Carolina win was enough to inspire panic among Romney's supporters, with Jennifer Rubin of the Washington Post warning that if Newt got the nomination he would "alienate virtually all independent voters, lose more than 40 states and put the House majority in jeopardy." But as evidence mounted that Romney's aggressive full-court Florida attack was succeeding -- and after Gingrich fared poorly in two televised debates last week -- it was Newt and his supporters who pushed the panic button, asserting that unless conservatives immediately rallied behind Gingrich, the "Establishment" would conspire to deliver the GOP nomination to Romney. Among those who have helped spread that message is former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who last week issued a Facebook warning that " the GOP establishment [is] trying to anoint a candidate without the blessing of the grassroots " and " using Alinsky tactics to kneecap Governor Romney's chief rival." Palin yesterday reiterated that charge during an appearance on Andrew Napolitano's Fox Business Network program, saying that "those inside the machine" are ganging up against Gingrich. For the first time during this campaign, Palin expressed a dismissive attitude toward another Republican challenger, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, telling Napolitano that the Republican choice is "one or the other" between Mitt and Newt, adding that it is "naively idealistic" to think either Santorum or Texas Rep. Ron Paul could mount a serious challenge to Romney. Because the Florida primary awards delegates on a winner-take-all basis, there is no benefit to candidates who can't contend for first place here. Paul skipped out of Florida after last Thursday's debate, while Santorum was forced to cut short his campaign in the Sunshine State because of his 3-year-old daughter's weekend illness. Both candidates, however, have vowed to continue the fight in upcoming caucuses and primaries. Santorum picked up the endorsement of influential conservative columnist and blogger Michelle Malkin Monday and, in an appearance in Missouri (which holds a non-binding primary vote next week), vowed to avoid "gutter politics" in his campaign. When the votes are counted tonight in Florida, Santorum will be watching the results with his supporters in Nevada, where Saturday's caucuses will be the next contest on the GOP campaign calendar. Meanwhile in Florida, the man who looks to be the loser in this winner-take-all primary was pushing an angry populist message yesterday to the supporters who gathered at the airport in Fort Myers. Gingrich warned that the Obama administration was attempting to impose a "dictatorship of anti-religious secularism," he promised to move the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, and he denounced Romney as having "no clue what Reagan stood for." (One Romney ad cites Gingrich's long-ago criticisms of President Reagan, which Gingrich sought to refute by bringing the Gipper's son, conservative talk-show host Michael Reagan, to campaign for him in Florida.) Gingrich welcomed the endorsement of Herman Cain -- whose Tea Party-backed campaign was derailed by allegations of sexual misconduct -- saying that the Atlanta businessman's support would "send a signal that this is a grassroots populist conservatism versus the establishment." The crowd enthusiastically cheered. "We're in a very simple campaign," Gingrich said. "We are pitting people power against money power. No question -- you look at the list of top ten donors to Mitt Romney, that's money power. That is the establishment. Those are the people who would be happy, as George Soros said, with either Obama or Romney, and they do not want a conservative. Those are the people who have led the assault on me over the last couple of weeks, by all sorts of folks whose number-one goal is to keep power in Washington the way it is now." Gingrich then alluded to New York -- that is to say, the Wall Street financiers who he alleges have bankrolled Romney's campaign against him -- as having perpetrated a fraud that he promised to expose. "I want you to know, I do not believe it is legitimate for the current establishment to preside over the decay as long as they're doing well. I think we have an obligation to our children, to our grandchildren, to fundamentally change Washington and, frankly, to fundamentally change New York. We deserve to know the truth about the last four years. We deserve to know what happened to our money." The afternoon sun was shining brightly and, behind Gingrich, palm trees were swaying in the warm breeze, but he seemed to see no irony in issuing this dark and chilly warning against the menace of "money power" to a Republican audience in the Sunshine State.
