For those of you who still don't believe that Israel's isolation by the Obama administration substantially increases the chance of war, or that Iran would risk nuclear retaliation by Israel for the chance to eliminate "the Zionist entity," one need look no further than the conservative Iranian web site alif.ir, where an author makes the case for attacking Israel: In the name of Allah Iran must attack Israel by ۲۰۱۴ The necessity of Israel annihilation in Imam Khomeini’s view “Today, the first Qibla of the Muslims has been occupied by Israel, a cancerous tumor for the Middle East. Today, Israel is causing division using all evil means. Every Muslim is obliged to equip themselves against Israel . For about ۲۰ years, I have been warning about the danger of international Zionist, and right now its danger for all the liberation revolutions in the world and the recent Islamic revolution of Iran is not less than the past .I have already warned that the Israeli usurping government, with the aims which it is seeking for, is a great danger for Islam and all Muslim nations, and it is likely that if Muslims leave Israel alone, the opportunity could be lost and it may not be possible to stop them; and since the potential danger is facing the foundations of Islam, it is necessary for the Islamic governments in particular and other Muslims in general to remove this corrupting material by any means . All our troubles are due to Israel! And Israel results from America too. Some points regarding the upcoming approach Point ۱: This article discusses tow THE JURISPRUDENTIAL JUSTIFICATIONS OF NECESSITY OF AN IRANIAN MILITARY ATTACK ON ISRAEL, and the necessity of attacking Israel and its military aspects Point ۲: In this approach, only the first step of the first curtain for Iran military invasion to Israel will be discussed and the complete explanation of ۲ curtains and ۸ steps will be published in the proper time Point ۳: This approach is just the personal opinion of the author and there is no guarantee whether the government of Islamic republic of Iran will accept and apply it or not If you're only going to read one more thing today, I encourage you to read the complete article from alif.ir, "captured" on Feb 7, 2012, and which contains not only radical Iranian and Muslim reasoning to attack Israel, but also strategic descriptions of population centers, key infrastructure, and military issues, click here . The link to the original alif.ir page is here . If this doesn't convince you of the error of Barack Obama's view that a diplomatic solution is possible, much less likely, then you're probably more interested in defending Obama than anything else. One might argue that the mullahs are using aggressive rhetoric to improve their negotiating position at some future multilateral forum. But as a Jew I've long realized that when people say they want to kill not just you, but everyone like you, the prudent course of action is to believe them. There is not a shred of evidence to suggest that the Iranian regime's intent is not precisely in line with the chilling article on a conservative Iranian web site. Unfortunately, our president has neither the wisdom nor the courage to do anything but talk, in a continuation of his feckless "apologize for America" approach to foreign policy.

In an interview with the Today show's Matt Lauer recorded on Superbowl Sunday, President Obama said that "Our preferred solution (to the Iranian efforts to develop a nuclear weapon) is diplomatic." Although he also stated "we're not taking any options off the table," it's hard to imagine the mullahs who rule Iran thinking that military action by the US has ever been on the table during this president's administration. So it's hard to believe that Obama thinks he is accomplishing anything of significance with his Monday order to freeze all financial assets (which are under American control) of the Iranian government or Iranian banks. A British attorney quoted in a Bloomberg News article on the policy shift said "It’s a declaration of economic warfare, to the extent that it’s not already been declared." But do the mullahs actually care about "warfare" that doesn't include weapons capable of destroying their uranium enrichment or missile production capabilities? Iran might rattle some sabres regarding disrupting shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, but they probably won't go far enough to start actual fighting because they know that as long as Obama feels like he's doing something, or fooling people into believing he's doing something, they can keep on working full-speed-ahead on a weapon intended to turn a major Israeli city into rubble. Furthermore, everybody talks about how much oil goes through that ocean passageway, but it must also be remembered that Iran is a large importer of gasoline. Thus interrupting shipping through the Strait would not be without major domestic economic and political consequences. The only reason they might pick a fight on the ocean is to rally internal support for their regime, creating the external enemy to blame for the nation's problems. It's a time-tested tactic, but one I doubt the mullahs will use. David A. Harris, president of the National Jewish Democratic Council, is also quoted by Bloomberg as saying that Obama's move “should end any doubt about the president’s singular commitment to ensuring Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon." Actually, Harris has it exactly wrong. Obama's move, while welcome, coming in the context of his reiteration that he wants and expects a diplomatic solution where it is increasingly obvious that none is possible, ends any doubt that the mullahs are laughing at the reign of Jimmy Carter II. The mullahs reaction will be "Obama just pulled the biggest weapon he's actually willing to use. He is now toothless. We'll pretend to be perturbed, but we feel little worse about this than Br'er Rabbit felt about being thrown into the briar patch." Their view is all the more accurate given this president's internationalist mindset, wanting to use the UN for every hard decision, now that we have seen Russia and China defend the indefensible Bashar al Assad, the murderous dictator of Syria. Barack Obama is out of his depth, and the world is a much more dangerous place for it. Israel is indeed, as Jed Babbin explained so well yesterday, sadly and perilously alone.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta believes that Israel will attack Iran in April, May, or June. This is according to a 2 February Washington Post column by David Ignatius, apparently relying on a conversation with Panetta. Ignatius's column came out at the same time as Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak's speech in which Barak declared that Iran would soon enter a stage where its nuclear program would be immune from attack. In his speech, according to a report in the Financial Times , Barak said, " The world today has no doubt that the Iranian military nuclear program is slowly but surely reaching the final stages, and will enter the immunity stage from which point the Iranian regime will be able to complete the program without any effective intervention and at its convenience." He added, "Dealing with a nuclearized Iran will be far more complex, far more dangerous and far more costly in blood and money than stopping it today. In other words, those who say 'later' may find that later is too late." Had statements like these come during the Cold War from, for example, America and Britain, it would be suspected as a ruse. Such ploys were a commonplace then, each side trying to maneuver against the other to draw wavering nations to their side in the dispute du jour . This is different. Since Obama took office, Israel has learned to suspect America, not trust it. Obama's Islam-centric foreign policy has broken the link between Israel and the United States. There is no common policy on Iran that could have resulted in coordinated statements by Barak and Panetta. The personal hostility between Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is the public face of deep disagreements. Their enmity became open after Obama had demanded Israeli-Palestinian negotiations based on the pre-1967 war borders. Last May, Netanyahu schooled Obama before the television cameras after a rocky private White House meeting. A visibly angry Obama shifted uncomfortably in his chair during Netanyahu's compelling lecture. Netanyahu's subsequent speech before a joint session of Congress amplified the clear break between the two men. Since then, Obama, Panetta, and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey have attempted to dissuade Israel from any military action against Iran. But the only result has been that Israel's distrust of the Obama administration has grown to the point that Israel will not tell Obama what it plans. Panetta himself has worked to heighten that distrust. Last December, he blamed Israel for the lack of talks with the Palestinians, admonishing Israel to "Just get to the damn table." In effect, by its feckless actions and pressure on Israel but not Israel's enemies, Obama has deprived Israel of options other than war. Continued sanctions against Iran have been met with defiance from Iran and dissembling from its allies. Iraq is apparently planning to help Iran avoid a pending embargo on Iranian oil by shipping Iranian oil from its ports, hiding its origin. (That plan may be only symbolic, because the construction of planned pipelines delivering oil and gas from Iran to Iraq's export center are not scheduled to be finished until 2014.) The European embargo of Iranian oil is months away, and may never happen. Obama's actions have made the Middle East and Southwest Asia vastly more unstable. Our actions to encourage rebellion in Egypt and military action in support of the Libyan rebellion have only propelled the jihadist Muslim Brotherhood movement to power in both nations. Panetta's announcement that we may withdraw from Afghanistan a year early relieves pressure on Iran and encourages both Iran and Pakistan to continue their strong support for the Taliban. Obama's plan to release five top Taliban commanders from Gitmo is a major boost to the Taliban. According to a leaked NATO classified report, the Taliban are confident that they will return to power quickly after our withdrawal from Afghanistan. Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said that Iran is prepared to launch terrorist action inside the United States. Iran was greatly emboldened when, in 2009, Obama's "hands off Iran" policy failed to support the nascent rebellion against the mullahs. Last December, a New York court held that Iran had helped al Qaeda mount the 9/11 attacks. The sad fact is that, since 1979, Iran has paid no price for its central role in terrorism against the United States. Obama's preference for passive sanctions -- rather than overt or covert measures that can deprive Iran from its ability to produce nuclear weapons -- has granted Iran more time to reach what Ehud Barak called the "immunity stage." What is that? Immunity for Iran means that its nuclear weapons program would be so deeply buried and dispersed that only a nuclear attack on it could delay or destroy it. Israel can't afford to wait for Iran's nuclear weapons program to become immune. Israel would certainly use nuclear weapons in response to such an attack against it, but it isn't about to wait until a preemptive nuclear attack on Iran is its only option. The Israeli calculus is complex. Attacking Iran will certainly provoke Iranian attacks, using missiles and terrorist proxies, which could result in massive Israeli casualties. Hizballah, Iran's Lebanese proxy, will launch its thousands of missiles into Israel. The Hamas terrorists in Gaza will do the same and other Iran-connected terrorists -- including al Qaeda -- will probably attack U.S. and other western targets. If Israel suffers massive casualties, it's entirely possible that its Arab neighbors would try to mount another 1967-like attack. But in 1967 and again in 1973, Israel had clear American support. When Israel appeared to be losing the 1973 war, U.S. Air Force aircraft were being armed and fueled to fly into the fight. That possibility still exists, but the Israelis' distrust of Obama is so great that they aren't including that in their war planning. Israel believes it is alone, and in that it's probably right. As I wrote about eighteen months ago in a quasi-fictional forecast , Israel's military will be stretched to the limit in attacking Iranian targets that are a long flying distance from Israel, and are both dispersed and -- in many cases -- deep underground. If it chooses to attack, it should also judge that suppression missions against Hizballah in Lebanon and against Syrian missile forces are an essential part of the plan. Such an attack will ignite a theater-wide war that Israel may not survive. Obama isn't serious about preventing Iran from achieving nuclear weapons. In the three decades since the Iranian regime came to power, no diplomatic effort has ever changed its behavior. The only option for us, for Israel, and for the shopkeepers of Europe is to strike at Iran's nuclear program to dismantle it. But that option, despite what Obama and Panetta say, isn't one we are seriously considering. Left with no other choice, Israel will have to do what we lack the resolve to do. If Secretary Panetta's belief is as the Washington Post reported, and if we are to take Ehud Barak's statements at face value, Obama's inaction would mean that Israel has concluded that it cannot rely on American action in its defense. By continuing inaction against Iran, going beyond ineffectual sanctions, Obama is pushing Israel toward war. Netanyahu is scheduled to visit the U.S. for a major speech to the AIPAC group next month. It may be the last opportunity for him and Obama to come to an understanding on decisive action against Iran. Soon after Netanyahu returns home, the Israelis will have to risk their nation's existence in a war that is as much ours as theirs.

Promoted from the diaries Most of my writing is on foreign policy. There are few other topic areas other than the law on which I’m comfortable writing. However, as streiff notes , I, like most other Catholics, got to hear a heartfelt letter from my Bishop — a living examplar of St. John Chrysostom’s famous (possibly apocryphal) maxim — explaining that clear out of nowhere, somehow, the Obama Administration decided to make Catholic institutions pay for abortifacents, birth control, and sterilization procedures, all of which are actually explicitly mortal sins in my faith, which is to say, one can be in danger of Hell merely for helping to provide them. As Sts. Nicholas and Chrysostom would not, in their unenlightened days, have likely had warm feelings for His Excellency, it is perhaps incumbent upon me to note that my Bishop neglected a few details in the sermon he had our deacon read aloud. His Excellency was absolutely silent on the possible election of a man who actively defended the post-uterine execution of neonatal infants, which I ascribe to moral laziness and cowardice, though it may have been instead interest in funding a short lived billboard campaign in Atlanta extolling Catholics who believe him and the Pope evil to come on back for a quick round of communion. The Secretary of Health and Human Services is a self-professing Catholic who is one of the most ardent defenders of the abortion license in our country. Obamacare was passed through the good offices of numerous nominally-Catholic Senators and Representatives, despite warnings from Catholic groups (such as the Knights of Columbus, who fought tooth and nail) and without so much as a peep of the same from our esteemed Bishops, that maybe, just maybe, the Obama Administration might be vaguely interested in making free abortion on demand and contraceptives available to all, conscience exceptions be damned. No pun. Instead, in that pastoral letter, there was a general note that this was bad, and we should all be aware of it. In the background, I believe I heard someone dropping bread into a bowl of milk. I may have also heard someone washing his hands before a condemned man, but I’m not sure about that. Back when there was a New Ledger , I wrote a now long-forgotten piece excoriating the Bishops in this country for complicity in its passage, for not speaking up, for not excommunicating the public officials who actively fight for the abortion license despite the infallible teachings of our Church — and by extension, for enabling a culture of license that enables the Culture of Death. (Piece stolen here ; TNL no longer publishes essays.) I stand by every word, and would like to add a few things. Let me start with the most basic one. You can all, each of you, and I say this after a week of prayerful meditation and with all of the respect I can give, go straight to the darkest pit in the lowest valley of the Ninth Layer of Hell and burn there. It was easy to sell out the unborn, wasn’t it? To just wish away an infallible teaching that — let’s be honest — has been such a headache since a Catholic Supreme Court Justice helped its mass breaking, and Catholic Democrats abandoned everything else to protect that breach, right? To let others commit a sin that our Church treats as so grave that it incurs the automatic sanction of excommunication? All in return for a goal you’ve shared with your Democrat masters since the 1940s — a chance to drive healthcare costs through the roof with the fig leaf of social caring. All so you could work with the sorts of people who are elected to office by publicly calling you theocrats and misogynists for more-or-less upholding the two-thousand-year-old Tradition of our Church. Thirty pieces of silver must buy one Hell of a lot more for you than it does for me. Who among you has stepped forward to say, Whoops! Or, We are infallible on matters of faith expressed through the Tradition or through an ecumenical Council, but we can err on policy, and hoo-boy, did we blow this one . Who among you spoke out last week and said, Attention my flock: I must now inform you that the Democratic Party has proven once and for all that if you vote for a Democrat in this country, you engage in material cooperation with evil. We will now be holding weekly mass Confession to handle the backlog until it clears. Because that is truth. In 2009 and 2010, nominally faithful Catholics who value all of the policy choices you do — labor unions, forced charity, high rates of taxation, urban ghettoes, and of course, universal “health care” — and who claimed to be ardent defenders of the unborn sold out to a one , sacrificed millions of babies and betrayed the infallible teaching of their faith so they could get one gigantic step closer to the social justice you so crave. And for that, for that moment when they put aside their baptismal and confirmation vows, repeated every Easter, and their recitation of whatever version of the Nicene Creed you’ve settled on this week, your response was … applause. Silence. Satisfaction. A professed willingness to work with the Administration. You made all of this possible. For almost my entire life, you have given my fellow Catholics every reason to believe they can freely sin, and hey, no problem, so long as they favor higher taxation and government spending. They can murder the unborn, and I have had all of two homilies, two, in my entire time as a Catholic, which is to say from birth and for the thirty-five years after, in parishes and dioceses across the country, in which a priest has said, If you have had, caused, or aided in obtaining an abortion, and you take communion today, you will go to Hell . You look out into your emptying pews, terrified of the wood you see and the flesh you don’t, through families of one, two, or sometimes amazingly three children, and think, Well, at least they’re still coming , as if you do not understand the connection between these things. In the wake of the sex abuse scandal, I got to hear read to me and my wife and small baby a heartfelt letter from a bishop not even in office when the terrible events at issue took place, making a sincere apology. In 2006, I got to get lectured at Easter about the importance of having lots of illegal immigrants in our country, from the same Bishop who told me last week he’s kinda confused about what happened with this whole Obama thing. As a child, the only time I read of the bishops taking a unified stand was on the evil of Ronald Reagan attempting to dismantle the greatest threat Christianity has known since the height of the Ottoman Empire. While I’m to the left of many of the readers and writers here on the issue of illegal immigration and how to resolve it, I’m struck by the fact that my Church seems to care more about defending the right to stay here of people whose first act on entering this country is to break its laws — a right not dogmatically defined by my faith — and on the evil of producing nuclear weapons than what it by its very teaching describes as the slaughter of one million innocent babies year in and year out. I am utterly appalled to realize that they are either too gullible, too cowardly, too stupid, or too dishonest with themselves and others to realize that if they tell Catholics that abortion can be traded off for more social welfare, a significant number of Catholics will make that trade, today, now, this instant. You have materially cooperated with evil, and I have yet to hear mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa . (Try the older Confiteor if you prefer: I confess to Almighty God, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned through my own fault. In my thoughts, and in my words ; in what I have done, and what I have failed to do . ) You are abetting scandal. You are aiding in the all-but-literal poisoning of political discourse in this country. And you are lying . You are lying by your words, by your acts, by your omissions. Whatever your rationales, you hide from the truth of what has been before you for forty years , and you aid in that deception to your flock. And the net result is that you now need to either (1) give in; (2) dump all of your employees into public healthcare (a double win, right?); or (3) disband . Given how you acted when Mitt Romney’s reign in Massachusetts forced you into the same corner, I fully expect (1). Heck, if you can provide abortifacents and prophylactics in New England, why not in Arizona? In a purer time, you would have been haled before an Ecumenical Council and been required to give an account of yourself, or been summarily excommunicated on the spot. In an emergency, the Pope would do this thing. I was born into the Faith. I was confirmed before my twelfth birthday. I nearly applied to seminary twice. I married in the Church. I am raising my many-more-than-two-children in the Faith. And every time I see something like this come down the pike, complete with passive-voice verbs and hand washing everywhere, the only things keeping me from joining one of the Orthodox Churches are my dislike of incense, my desire to avoid being as dim as poor Donatist Rod Dreher , and my firm belief that the Church teaches Truth, even though its princes are men by genetics only. But as you now reap what you have sown for twice my lifetime, I say, with all the charity I can muster, that you can rot.

After billions in stimulus funding failed to transform impotent green energy sources into profitable endeavors, even Obama has taken a break from promoting Wind and Solar. He is even talking more about oil and gas exploration, although his sincerity is in serious doubt. Unfortunately, some Republicans have not relinquished their affinity for using public funds to prop up their local wind industry. Yesterday, Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad and Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback sent a letter to the 20 members of the payroll tax cut conference committee imploring them to extend the Production Tax Cut (PTC) for Big Wind, set to expire at the end of the year. They warned that “wind development will grind to [a] halt due to the uncertainty of a PTC extension.” The PTC is among 51 ‘tax extenders’ that have either expired last December or are slated to expire this December. It grants a 2.2 cent/per kilowatt-hour refundable credit for wind, solar, or geothermal. Believe it or not, that is a large sum of money. According to the Heritage Foundation , if the oil industry received a commensurate subsidy, they would get a $30 check for every barrel produced. The PTC is tantamount to an Earned Income Tax Credit for corporations. As such, the governors are probably correct to assume that Big Wind will grind to a halt without the credit. And that’s how it should be in our free-market economy. Why is this any different than Obama’s attempt to pick winners and losers? Actually, in this instance, we would be picking losers as winners. While ending the tax credit will probably bring down Big Wind, it’s not like the subsidy actually helped Wind become prosperous. In 2010, wind accounted for 0.9% of our energy supply, geothermal 0.2%, and solar 0.1% . Many states offered their own tax credits to the wind industry, and lost money. In Texas, the property tax break alone cost the state $1.6 million per job created. What we really need to do is to let all targeted tax breaks expire, especially to those industries that have no tax liability to begin with. Last year, Congressman Mike Pompeo (R-KS) introduced legislation ( HR 3308 ) to sunset all non-universal energy tax credits and grants, including those for fossil fuels and nuclear power . The bill would use the savings from the repeal of these credits (roughly $90 billion over ten years) to lower the corporate tax rate on everyone, including green energy companies (to the extent that they pay taxes at all). HR 3308 has 18 co-sponsors, including Paul Ryan. It should garner the support of the entire caucus. Yesterday, Senators DeMint and Lee introduced the bill in the Senate . We should urge everyone to cosponsor the bill. When we’re trying to draw bold contrasts to Obama on the issue of venture socialism, the last thing we need is members from our party muddling the distinction by offering their constituents an echo, instead of a choice.
Global Christianity is thriving, with one out of every 3 people on earth professing Christian faith, according to a Pew study released last month. But Christianity is shifting south. Two percent of global Christians 100 years ago lived in sub-Saharan Africa. Today, nearly a quarter do, equal to Europe's percentage, and soon surely to surpass it. Insulated secular elites in the U.S. remain largely clueless about thriving religion even in America, much less globally. To the extent they notice domestic religion, it is often the echoing voices of liberal Protestant elites who preside over increasingly empty churches. The Presbyterian Church (USA) and the Episcopal Church, both of which are now likely below 2 million members, will have their governing conventions this summer. They will probably solidify their liberal trends, especially in deconstructing traditional marriage. United Methodism, unique among the major liberal Mainline denominations for having not compromised its sexual teaching, will convene its General Conference in late April in Tampa. Its U.S. membership of 7.6 million is shrinking, while is overseas membership of 4.5 million, mostly in Africa, is surging. Meeting at the same convention center where Republicans will nominate their presidential candidate a few months later, the United Methodists perhaps will offer a little more excitement than the GOP. Church liberals, as they have for 40 years, hope they will finally overturn the denomination’s prohibition against same-sex unions and clergy sexually active outside heterosexual marriage. But 30 percent of the nearly 1000 delegates this year will come from Africa, and another 10 percent from the Philippines, Europe, and elsewhere overseas. The overseas churches, especially Africa, are overwhelmingly conservative. Liberals will need over 80 percent of U.S. delegates to win. But about 200 of the 600 U.S. delegates are believed to be evangelical, making the odds almost insurmountable. The U.S. church’s only growing areas are in the relatively more conservative South, while the U.S. church as a whole loses 50,000 to 70,000 members annually. The liberal West Coast and Northeast regions that are most adamant about “full inclusion” are the fastest declining. This year, the whole West Coast and Rocky Mountain region will have only 32 delegates, or only about 3 percent of the total. The Democratic Republic of the Congo will by contrast send 136. African churches gained more than 1 million members since the last General Conference, while the U.S. church lost about 300,000. At over 12 million members and fast approaching 13 million, the United Methodist Church is now possibly the ninth largest denomination in the world. And arguably it is the largest global Protestant church. Catholics number over 1 billion, the Russian Orthodox Church reputedly has 125 million, the Ethiopian Church (Oriental Orthodox) has 48 million, the Church of England claims 25 million, Germany’s Evangelical Church (Lutheran) reports 24 million, the Romanian Orthodox cites 23 million, the Church of Nigeria (Anglican) has 18 million, and the U.S. Southern Baptist Convention has over 16 million. All of the larger Protestant churches are mostly national churches. In contrast to a typical Southern Baptist governing convention or a Church of England synod, United Methodism’s uniquely international General Conference will sometimes appear schizoid. Nigerians will denounce homosexuality as an abomination, while U.S. transsexuals will insist on the holiness of cross dressing and sex change operations. At a pre-General Conference news briefing last week in Tampa, a liberal Minnesota bishop presided over a panel on “holy conferencing” about civil disagreement. But the panel ended with an angry lesbian activist complaining she had been denied ordination 3 times and insisting the time for dialogue was over. The time for justice is now! The Minnesota bishop, along with the briefing program, described the chief political issues before United Methodism as anti-Israel divestment, liberalized immigration, environmentalism, and opposing the Afghanistan War, including nuclear disarmament. The General Conference will focus especially on “repentance and healing” over mistreatment of American indigenous people. One church official described how Tampa was a “deportation center” for Cherokees and other tribes during the early 19th century's “Trail of Tears.” He also bemoaned how an ancient Indian mound once blocks away from the convention center had been destroyed a century ago to extend Tampa’s Jackson Street, named for the president who deported eastern tribes westward. Meanwhile, an anti-Israel caucus invited participants at the United Methodist briefing in Tampa to attend a session on divestment proposals targeting companies that profit from Israel’s “occupation,” such as Motorola, Caterpillar and Hewlett Packard. A divestment spokeswoman faulted “campaign donations” and “arms sales” for bolstering pro-Israel policies in the U.S. The briefing was poorly attended, but the anti-Israel divestment proposal, aimed at the church’s huge pensions fund, comes from the denomination’s official lobby office. United Methodism already has officially denounced the "occupation," the spokeswoman pointed out, and its bishops have opposed U.S. arms sales to Israel. Focusing on the historic crimes of America and Western Civilization, both real and perceived, is a favorite theme for politically correct U.S. church bureaucrats. But these mostly leftist themes will not resonate with most international delegates. For Nigerians and other Africans, discussing the threat of radical Islam would be more relevant to their own current situation. For U.S. church liberals, any conversation potentially negative about aspects of even political Islam would be anathema. When African churches soon become a majority within the once all U.S. denomination, overshadowing U.S. liberals, the chronic debate about sex will finally recede. So too will the preoccupation with U.S. political themes. The increasingly global United Methodist Church will then confront new controversies. But at least it will then reflect the concerns of millions of Christians around the world, rather than the obsessions of a cloistered, elite few in the U.S.
