I know it might not seem like much, in the broad 21st Century scheme of life in these “progressive” United States of America, but I find it a bit of a microcosm of where we are, and where we are heading. First they came for the basketball hoops. Then they came for… (Delaware Online) – On Hilldale Court — a small, quiet street ending in a cul-de-sac — that blue basketball rim appeared to be the only one to survive the morning commotion. DelDOT dug up several others. A 2005 state law specifically directs DelDOT to remove things that are in the right of way, which includes the small spat of grass before the curb begins in many neighborhoods. This is done to protect motorists and the people playing sports, according to the law. Initially, one police car was sent to assist DelDOT workers. Three or four more were called in for backup when they came across a stubborn Melissa McCafferty sitting on top of the basketball hoop. “We were simply there to try to talk her into coming down off the pole,” said police Cpl. Jeffrey Hale. McCafferty’s husband, John, planned to file for an injunction in Chancery Court to prevent DelDOT from coming back for the hoop. He didn’t do it soon enough. Hours later, DelDOT and police returned to finish the job, warning they would arrest McCafferty if she tried to climb the pole again.
